I heard about a new religion in cambodia or some such place and made me think, why isn’t there a proliferation of new religions in the modern, informed, connected world. Meaningful ones with an intent and message(Not kabbalah )
I personally think that those who would compose a new religion with any relevence would be someone with a high intellect, non-cynical, and a dissolutement with the current state of affairs in life in general. A difficult list of criteria, I certaily don’t fit the bill and their isn’t anyone that springs to mind, seeing as cynicism goes hand in hand with dissolutement with the world and a high intellect usually inspires that.
The real question was, if you were to start a new religion, what would be the defining factor that would make it a ‘‘religion’’:
Just a name?
A religious text?
A spiritual head?
A prophet?
Or are all new religions just cults by loonies who think they are all of the above, your views?
We made a religion after me once, it was called Piercetianity and had ten members, known as Piercetians.
The religion was simple, to attain the Divine Empowerment, one simply had to follow these rules for life.
1.) Pierce must always be referred to in the first person pronoun sense.
2.) A Piercetian must always refer to his/herself in the third person pronoun sense.
3.) One must never consume Macaroni & Cheese.
4.) Never end a sentence with a preposition.
5.) Boxers over briefs, always.
6.) If you must drink milk, it must be skim milk.
That’s it, now after you die, you will have achieved Divine Empowerment and will have the ability to rot in the ground until your corpse decomposes into an unrecognizable oily mush!

Seriously though, let’s say that whatever Religion you believe in, conform to, whatever, now didn’t and you just found out about it now, would you belive in it or not. I know the HUGE implications of that particular question but without being drawn into the bottomless(yet sometimes fun) pit of semantics, can you answer?
Beyond that can you answer the actual posts questions?

The added phrase of sound mind and body was not meant in direct reference to the question(I should have put it in brackets) it was meant as a reference to people entering a cult who most of the time are not(clinically, before we get into more semantics) because the question sounds cult-y.

To be honest, the whole thing is badly phrased and generalised. But you get the picture if you (cough, cough) lighten up.
I would recommend either creating a false transmission and claiming that your religion dates back to the ancient druids or that you become a prolific science fiction writer and later say that your works were divinely inspired while incorporating some basic aspects of modern psychology and simultaneously denying psychology is worthwhile.
Or in other words, be a crackpot, loony, megalomaniac.
I myself do not adhere to any faith or particular way of life, for the reason that I don’t know them. I have read some of your threads and know nothing of confucious or his son new confucious(bad joke, not an idiot)
It seems to me most Eastern religion is based on study of the particular teachings established by early thinkers, later reviewers and generally interpreting it yourself also. Is this in any way accurate?
It does intrigue me but I think I would never be drawn to follow any way of thinking, be it spiritual or philosophical, I would however use them to speak to people who do(you have to with philosophers).
to answer the question put down in the first post. To begin a religion one must first have a guideline of directions. So text must be the starting point. All the rest comes afterwards if your ego needs it.
Just a simple set of guidelines done by a Public Relations expert should do the trick.

What I was trying to get at was, do you accept/believe in your religion first then god or god first then your religion.
I wasn’t trying to set up a Cult/Supermarket Chain/Sci-Fi Series/Whatever, just trying to ask a question, although, very very very very, badly. Stop pointing it out.

Don’t religions have Buildings? Don’t religions have salespeople? Don’t religions have their regular customers? And don’t religions have their little specials for today only?
To answer your question, you actually need to believe in your God first. the religion is just decoration for the god. Its clothing so to speak.
To believe in your religion first, is kind of like buying a car with no engine or body. you have a rolling chassis but, what the hell is it?

The only way I can see your view being possible is if you were brought up in the religion you now accept and the acceptance of both God and doctrine fused together at a very young age in your memory so that you cannot remember. This is only an uneducated guess, however.
