This is funny… and brave. Stephen Colbert did a send up at a dinner and lampooned pretty much everyone he could think of including Bush who was sitting a few feet away. Helen Thomas (the old journalist) plays a big part in the “presentation”. The Bush’s were not happy.
having seen it online, I must say it was inspired.
Not so much about the president, but it was also about the
gutless media who just rolls over and plays dead for
this administration. The “bad faith” of the media was
clearly evident while watching this. The largely media crowd
was very uncomfortable because they don’t want the American
people to know that the American media has failed it job.
Colbert mocks conservatives with sarcastic requests to the media to ignore these issues that they are reporting and somehow you come away with the notion that the media has failed to report these things?
“By the way, before I get started, if anybody needs anything else at their tables, just speak slowly and clearly into your table numbers. Somebody from the NSA will be right over with a cocktail.”
and
“But, listen, let’s review the rules. Here’s how it works: the president makes decisions. He’s the decider. The press secretary announces those decisions, and you people of the press type those decisions down. Make, announce, type. Just put 'em through a spell check and go home. Get to know your family again. Make love to your wife. Write that novel you got kicking around in your head. You know, the one about the intrepid Washington reporter with the courage to stand up to the administration. You know - fiction!”
I thoroughly enjoyed watching that! I wish there was mor footage of Presidents reaction…either squirming or entirely oblivious to that conseqeunces of the humour…
It was about time someone bitch slapped this Presidency! Obviously God pichted slapped them first i.e. with all those supernatural Hurricanes! But, thankfully, this comedian had sharp wit and pointed the finger directly and didn’t flinch!
The more I see of it, the more I come to appreciate Colbert’s work. He really has the courage of his comedic convictions and is dedicated to his character.
…“I think a general government necessary for us, and there is no form of government but what may be a blessing to the people if it is well administered; and believe farther that this is likely to be well administered for a course of years and can only end in despotism, as other forms have done before it, when the people shall become so corrupt as to need despotic government, being incapable of any other. . .â€
—Benjamin Franklin to the delegates of the Constitutional Convention, prior to the final vote
UPDATE:
Since its release, the video was “burning up” YouTube, and Salon says interest in it was only surpased by the election coverage and Abu Ghraib but the resounding silence from the media after was a chilling. It was either ignored completely, skimmed over or reviewed as having “bombed badly”
pay no attention to the people who say the glass is half empty. because 32% (dubyas approval rating) means its two thirds empty…
…theres still some liquid in that glass!.. is my point… but i wouldnt drink it.
(scratches nose, looks down) the last third is usually backwash."

"heres how it works. the president makes the decisions -hes the decider, the press secretary announces those decisions, and you people of the press type those decisions down… just put em through a spell check and go home…

i think he will be invited back because the people who would have barred him werent smart or quick enough to understand most of the jokes. i mean, those people are willing to support the republicans.
what an amazing, courageous genius, the likes of which have never been seen. ive never even seen anyone go so far into character. its obviously gotten transparent by now, but it completely creates a whole new way to make fun of the same things. there are few people id rather meet, like talleyrand or maybe jesus. but only because they happened to have come across first hand information that colbert hasnt.
It could also be rapport. More of a play on words with that one.
I noticed the prior link was a dead one so here is one that currently still works if anyone wants to watch it again or for the first time.
