I can’t stand most of the stuff on the radio so I figure people is the next best option. List a band or two, describe what their sound is like, what mainstream band they most sound like, if their music is accessable, and a song to check out of theirs.
Ill start…
TV on the Radio - Dark/Pop/Rock/Experimental - Some people say their lead singer sounds like Peter Gabriel. Other influnces are The beach Boys, U2, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Pretty accessable - youtube.com/watch?v=GUB1xSAAADk
Tool - Dark/Experimental/Progressive - Led Zeppelin/Pink Floyd - Definitely not accessable for the most part. - youtube.com/watch?v=hii17sjSwfA
Tom Waits - Dark/Folk/Singer Songwriter - I have no idea. He sounds like a character in a Tim Burton film. Awesome voice. Arguably the best in all of music. Very unique. Suprisingly most of his stuff is pretty easy to get into. - youtube.com/watch?v=kzKiqk2iynY
I’d reccommend all three of those bands. All excellent.
I don’t know, I listen to a lot of bands but I’d say I really do like In Flames, Nevermore, Dark Tranquility, Disturbed, Metallica, Darkane, Killswitch Engage, Drowning Pool, All That Remains. . . . Well I geuss i really don’t have a favorite band, I like pretty much every kind of music besides almost all rap. And some country. Do I have to say what all these bands are like? You’ve probly heard of all of them. The ones you most likely have not heard are:
Nevermore - I have no freaking idea what kind of music this is, you’ll have to listen. Somewhere along the lines of Metal, Alternative, and Melodic mabe.
Dark Tranquility - Melodic Death Metal
Darkane - Thrash Metal to Death Metal and has symphonic elements to its music, such as full orchestras, choir singing, and acoustic interludes.
Trivium - You may have heard of them. Mostly Metal.
I also like Drowning Pool and I enjoy Dark New Day’s album, Twelve Year Silence. Tantric is pretty good too. As you can see I’m more of a rock kind of guy. I do like classical and alternative as well.
(Please be aware that I’m not very good at determining genres of bands.)
Well there are a few. If thats not enough I could find some more. I really like In Flames, very good band in my opinion. Nevermore is a band you have listen to for a bit before you start to like them.
Most of those bands sounded the same to me. Not much variation. To be honest I didnt really like any of it. Sounded all like dark/hard/girly music. Kinda like metal emo IMO.
Thanks for the links though. I love suggestions to new music.
No. No disrespect. It is definitely my opinion and nothing more. To tell you the truth most of my favorite bands nowadays I didnt like very much the first time I heard them.
Dark = Everthings has a darker atmosphere and/or is a little angrier than usual.
Girly = They just break into somewhat cliche choruses about how bad their feeling or how someone has hurt them. Its like they have this real heavy sound and then their chorus has a very mass appeal that seems a bit girly to me.
People. Keep listing new music though. Its supposed to be the universal language. or is that humor?

Good band, saw them live on Halloween.
Interpol - post punk revival done right, a cross between joy divison and the cure. youtube.com/watch?v=jkBAUqp6NKg
Death From Above 1979 - I’ve heard some crazy ass attempts at describing their sound, but it is pretty much a rough sounding indie rock band. youtube.com/watch?v=tzNrYRqH35Q
Indie generally doesn’t stand alone, and while there are genres that are only indie, there are genres that stretch from indie into mainstream music. Indie rock for example, and that’s when the distinction becomes important. It tells you to expect something a little different, along with a relatively low production quality, and usually music that isn’t highly polished. It also tells you what to expect in the lyrics as well as the general chord themes ect. Lyrics will not be about standard stuff like banging a chick, or killing a thug, or whatever, and the music itself will contain less harmony and will favor complexity over simplification for the purpose of catchiness.
Naturally, this is all only to be taken in general.
Those over the pond should be thankful to be unawares of indie, bunch of posing bastards (where’s that vomit smiley?). If I had to recommend something off the top of my head, Kodo! Japanese taiko drumming thingy stuff. Good.
humegotitright - I thought that last one was the best. The others seem like they need getting used to in order to like them. But if you look at the stuff I like and compare, there are a lot of differences, so it’s kinda a given for me. That’s just my opinion.
