Suicidal Primate.

I can’t think of any other animal species that commits suicide in contrast to homo sapiens, can you?

I was thinking about this the other day when I was watching Animal Planet on television oddly enough.

What does this say for us as people?

…that sentience comes at a price…

Apparently with a steep one…

Seems so…

Other animals don’t commit suicide, because other animals don’t have to deal with Colin Leslie Dean.

But seriously, I think the real reason is because we as a species, are flawed.

A while back there was a studied conducted to see why humans kill each other. One man came across some research that said that our primitive brain, when it was developing, developed so quickly that the neurons or something connecting it all together were flawed. So we have flawed circuitry.

I personally see homo sapiens as the short bus of all the other animal species in the world…

Wisdom brings misery. Ignorance is bliss.

Jump in!

Pretty much. With all the suicides of ours species world wide in any given year I am going to vote that we are miserable self deluded creatures with no end in our own self destruction or the destruction of everything around us.

Just my two cents. ( My, am I cheery or what? =P~ )

Trahne

If so called “humanity” had it’s own special theme music or cosmic commercial it would be the retarded magic school bus.

( Can’t believe he actually watched that cartoon when he was a kid but he did. :stuck_out_tongue: )

Oh god, that show kicked ass… Miss lizz or what ever the teachers name was a totally a tweaker

uh… yeah, that explains everything

Seriously that has nothing to do with it, humans are violent not because its flawed circuitry, quite far from the fact, its because our circuitry isn’t flawed, its because our circuitry was designed to work in hunter-gatherer groups where we spent well over 99% of our time as a species.

We’re prone to violence because the ancients who were prone to violence lived instead of died, and we’re their ancestors. We inherit the bloodlust of humanity just by being born.

[b]Don’t get me wrong theres A LOT of hardcore research on human agression that highlights a lot of the ugly parts of human nature. Try Homocide by Daly/Wilson, check out “The Most Dangerous Animal” by david livingstone smith, Lawerence Keeley’s “War before civilization” or any of the comparitive primate studies. If humans have messed up circuitry, what of the chimps that brutalize each other beyond recognition? Ripping off finger nails/fingers, gouging eyes, drinking blood out of face wounds/ cracking bones, beating another chimp so hard its ribs pop out.

Unfortunately the ancestors of chimps who did this shit lived more often, had more babies, spread more genes so that current chimps do it almost unconsciously. To think humans are any different, to think that we’re violent for any other reason but that it spread the genes of our ancestors, is wrong.

The reason is we have complex mental adaptations which can misfire in spectacular ways. Other animals don’t worship the sky either, which is the point, humans are mentally very unique in the animal kingdom.

They also don’t drive cars, listen to music, write poems, etc.

Whales. Whales commit suicide. There is evidence that some sonar sounds used by boats drive them mad, and they will beach themselves or smash their heads against a rock to escape the sound. I think there was a mass suicide of around 100 on a beach once.

Pretty nuts. Obviously not motivated by the same reasons humans are, but they still deliberately take their own lives.

a different type of suicide but i guess it could be construed as suicide… i like suicidal monkeys better

It sounds like whales take their own life because their in physical pain perpetrated by another species versus people who take their own lives out of mental anguish through themselves.

I would have to say there exists a great difference.

Let’s face the reality that actual suicide is unique among people only.

People are so unique and special in that they kill themselves in unique ways through self infliction…truely we are great species to behold in the evolutional framework. #-o

Duh… Lemmings! :unamused:
