After much toil and sweat (well, metaphorically anyway), SYM·PO·SI·A is finally here. SYM·PO·SI·A aims to be an online collection of knowledge and wisdom containing articles, creative writing and reviews written by people all over the world, and hopefully you guys too.
I urge you all to go over there, have a read of the articles already in the database and to contribute. All of you have got it in you to submit something of worth to share with the rest of us, so don’t be scared to do so. The categories are very similar to the forums we have here (apart form Mundane Babble of course!).
Contribution
Your contributions at SYM·PO·SI·A will not go unnoticed. Thanks to km2_33, anyone who contributes an article will be able to display this under their name:
And for star contributors there is the even more exciting:
Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this project, especially the staff, the ThinkTank folks and km2_33. I hope it will be a useful addition to the ILP community and to the online philosophy community at large. Obviously this project will only work if people submit stuff to the archive, so I really would encourage you to give it a go!
Obviously this project is only in its early stages so if you have any questions/comments/queries please refer them to the Help&Suggestions forum.
Visually, it looks really good – especially since a bit more colour has been added down the left-hand, navigation column and the fonts have been cleaned up. I particularly like the crisp, fresh feel (very readable) and easy navigation. Whoever did the web, did a nice job.
We’d be happy to remove your essay, monooq, if you want. Just pm someoneisatthedoor. For what it’s worth I liked it. Even better, give us one you’re more proud of to replace it.
I love Symposia! It’s like ILP’s very own mini-version of Wikipedia (sort of)!
Ben, I contributed an article under my true name, Stephen K. Donnelly. Please hook da brutha up (translation: Please may I have a contributer title image thing?). Thanks.
BTW:
Just to prove my integrity, I submitted my article BEFORE I even realized that I could get a title image thing…
I’m actually considering asking to have my tag removed, it clashes with my avatar…
Even though it means breaking my recently instituted vow of silence if you want to contribute to Symposia, embracetrees, then write an article, a story, a poem or two or a review of something that interested you. Obviously we don’t want bitchy ‘I went to see X the other day and it was a pile of frigid horseshit’ kinds of things, unless of course you are writing a satirical review for the creative writing section…
You could just do 2,000 words of your famed Tom Cruise impression…
This brings up a very good point: what, if anything, is being done to ensure that true “philosophical-value” is present in each and ever article submitted to Symposia?
I guess I really don’t expect people to go out of their way and take the time to post something worthless. Stuff like that (fortunately) just does not tend to be an issue (or so it seems to me, at least).
But regardless, I LOVE Symposia as I would love a brand new Porsche Turbo al my own!
Essentially I’m going through each article assessing it for ‘merit’ or ‘value’ or whatever and when I’ve got my list of ‘questionnable’ articles I’ll discuss them with ben, obw et al and we’ll make the decisions that need making. I’m also snowed under reading and trying to format 2 lengthy pieces so if anyone wishes to comment on articles that they think are not up to scratch (I appreciate that most people don’t want to badmouth other people’s work) or PM me if they don’t want to be public about it then please feel free to do so. Almost all feedback is welcome at this stage…
The Reviews section is as yet unused, though there are rumblings afoot regarding that. Any section to which you would feel comfortable contributing will gladly consider any submissions.
Ben, I am reading “Can cooperation emerge in a world of self-interested individuals without central authority?”. Your silence and quick goodbye on msn chat made me think that you were the kind of guy who had nothing to say, but I guess you are full of wide thoughts. =)
It is nice to read your thoughts.
I made an entry for the symposia about foundations, development and existence formats which was short/very true, then desided not to give it away. I wanna publish a big-bad-book someday, but I am curious. Do I send stuff in a PM to SIATD when I want it to be added to the symposia?
