Synchronicity

Synchronicity is an experience of an event or group of events as meaningfully related to the experiencer (a meaningful coincidence), when such events are unlikely to have a(n) (outward) causal relationship. I think most people have had such an experience to one degree or another at least once in their life. Sometimes, the meaningful coincidence is minor enough that it is noticed by the individual, but dismissed. Sometimes the experience affects the person and causes him to change his beliefs or attitudes, and sometimes it is so forceful upon the mind that it may even change a course of person’s whole life.

In an attempt to explain this psychic phenomenon, I think most literature too readily points a finger at the sky using it as evidence of conscious universe, or god, or some other divine force out there, interacting with the individual. But I think the truth may be closer to home. This meaning-ful pattern was perceived by the mind, which means that the origin is in the mind, and so is the answer. Even though the experience itself is consciously perceived as an event coming from the outside (not sought out), I think still it was the work of own mind. Sometimes, the mind can be an adept trickster and perhaps it is a part in the mind which may needed to bypass the rational part of mind to bring itself into awareness. The trick is in knowing what this need is and where it comes from within the mind.

The mind is formed unaware of rationality and has to guess at it. If it can’t seem to get enough coherent understanding, it makes less certain guesses. When stressed, it makes highly improbable guesses, “paranoia”.

It is merely trying to survive in a world that doesn’t seem to want it to do so, keeping it confused.

…the collusion of events in proximity whether consciously or unconsciously striven for. It encompasses the psychological urge to knit events together into some meaningful paradigm.

In the retroactive view, denoted as hindsight, “Synchronicity” would appear as the biography of one’s life up to that point. The good and the bad instead of simply fate would appear as pure Synchronicity though at that time may not be recognized as such or responded to according to its “clues”. Being “out of synch” is tantamount to misery, neurosis and possibly even psychosis. Conversely, its recognition, by whatever means, could be the adjustment to re-balance the psyche.

Anyways, that’s how I see it…even though there is much more to “See” on the subject of Synchronicity. It is first a quality which belongs foremost to the Cosmos itself of which human psychology is but a miniscule emanation or reflection.

The ideas are still being worked out, but the idea of paranoia (i.e. positive paranoia, or pronoia) caught my attention. It has been noted that many instances of synchronicity are preceded by a charged mental state. Sometimes I see subconscious as a program that is running silently in the background of the conscious mind. The program is instructed to search out patterns and meaning that are relevant to the person. I think this is a default state in an average person, and this is how a person “notices things” in his every day life. My first theory is that the program can be inadvertently, or intentional pushed into overdrive where it continues functioning unawares to the conscious mind. So, a person may be consciously engaged in another project with the background program is still running in overdrive. The program is like a slot machine, always spinning and searching for a pattern that is meaningful to the person and when it eventually finds one…BINGO! It pushes its solution into conscious awareness, often taking the person, who by then probably forgot about it, by surprise. Another way imagine it would be to see it as a pop up screen from a computer program running in the background, notifying the conscious that the scanning is complete. Because it takes the conscious person by surprise, and because it is usually still meaningless in itself (“what does this mean?”), the person tries to tie these unrelated events together, which often leads the person to believe in fate, god or as in the case of Chinese, deterministic universe.

But what does it really point to? Accusal universe or the limitations/weaknesses of the human mind. Most cultures throughout history have chosen to see synchronicity as a proof of deterministic (or semi-determinisitc) universe. To sages and spiritual masters who are said to be one with God or deterministic universe, everything around them is seen as meaningful and synchronous. If the patterns are sought by the mind based on personal experience and meaning, what patterns is their mind seeking, and in relation to who or what? What kind of program are they running?
I do see an interesting switch taking place when a person accepts determinism. Another thing that is noted in the case of paranoia (both positive and negative) is that everything becomes…PERSONAL. Events are not random and meaningless but are seen as personally tailored to the individual. The universe may work with or against, but it is still about YOU. When an individual accepts determinism, it becomes impersonal again (“It was meant to be”, “I’m just a pawn in the cosmic play”, etc.). And what is the result? A person becomes free to roam around, without really taking the burden of considering consequences, actually making the consequences.

For me, this raises more questions than answers: what causes one person to experience negative paranoia and another a positive paranoia? How does meaning play into all of this, into existence, into human life, how should it? How can one tell the difference between delusion and revelation? Etcetera, etcetera…so many angles…

The line of questioning suggests that one step back is all that’s necessary to see the answer, or at least to create the space where it can appear. Causality is not a concept that is applicable to everything. It holds no content of meaning, it represents a homogenous quality and a lot of quantities, no difference in qualities. Paranoia, self-imaging, projection into the world - all of us are suffering from it - it is what consciousness is. Some are more attuned to their direct environment and future, others more to long distance paradigms. All of this is sensitivity to meaning, and meaning is the sensibility of self-conscious life, that around which it keeps its consciousness related to its life.

So when we experience synchronicity and wonder how the deterministic cause could be contained in the subjective meaning, we ask the wrong question. Causality simply means that stuff happens in relation to other stuff. That things aren’t isolated. Ultimately, that there are no things, but only process.

The scientific myth is different from the scientific method. The method involves carefully selected processes, stuff that complies with the sort of expectations science needs to be able to have. The myth is that all things can be explained in that way. The way in which the particular viewpoint that gave rise to scientific domination took hold is well explained by without-music in the thread “The Ontological Tyranny”.

In the meantime, life goes on as substances that select their interactions with each other in the terms of their survival and attainment of their values. I mean values as in a plant that needs carbon from the air and doesn’t need oxygen, so it is of value to other lifeforms by what it expels from itself. In this way, all values are relating valuers with each other, in the most contradicting and complementary ways. All of this is happening while people are trying to align electrons so that they might or might not bounce off a wall. The portions of existence that can be selected, isolated an perceived will be selected, isolated and perceived - or not -, the others will keep behaving in ways that are proper to their own, invisible ways of relating to other inscrutable forms. The universe is interconnected in literally every possible way it can be. That is only logical. Linear causality can describe the connections of events in one plane of time and one strand of environment. It can not explain a gravity field, you need a more comprehensive logic for that. It can certainly not describe a culture, you need a much more comprehensive logic for that. The way things, events, are related is not readable in terms of a linear progression of probabilistic nano events. The concept of that alone is ludicrous. What science clearly implies is that it is limited in what it can relate without breaking its own laws. In reality, when the doors of perception are cleansed, events are related simply by their relationship. Synchronicity designates a powerful relation that is significant on more than one plane. It gives the relating evens and their agents and objects more substance, quality, density. The events and their objects are pulled closer to the core of the subject. The universe is unfolding upon the subject, its folds come together in a juncture, the person is aware he, rather than any scientific definition, is the law of his own world. He who gives meaning - as you described, Pandora - the brain is selective. But not because it is defective, but because that is what brains do, filter - value in terms it can use to sustain itself and justify itself to itself - that is all it does.

When synchronicity happens, it is on the one hand the random occurrence of a meaningless coincidence, - but on whose hand? Who are we convincing? Only the assumption that by a logic that we can not possibly apply, the event will fail to make the same sort of sense as it does by the standard of experience. We can never verify if such events are not indeed rooted, causally, in the origin of their significance, that they only arrive there, randomly, perceived as significance by an opportunistic brain. We can not scientifically verify any meaning. It’s rather an inverse relation - science allows us to see through meaning, to dissolve it, to see another picture than a meaningful one. But the power of science versus meaning fools almost everyone besides its creators into thinking that it also explains meaning - away. It does’n - it has still not explained the relation between thought the brain. By all accounts I trust, this is because the brain is not a builder-causer, but a filter-transmitter. Thoughts originate in the brain, but their substance - their poles and their arc, the values and their interplay - is of a non-physical nature.

Selection is the cosmic substance, synchronicity is an occasion where matter is seen as subjected to resonating a more primal process. Life, all good moments, are seen as matter subjected to selecting, when identity and choice come together, - and synchronicity is, considered in its own right, one of a human life’s great stimulants.

Synchronicity - one of my favorite words.

I had this experience only once, synchronicity, that is, insofar as i can remember. Sometimes when i think about it, I still question it - I still try to ascertain if there was something else at work, something else at play which responded to something I said. It remains both a mystery to me and a wonderful gift. I don’t mean God either. Was it/is it just something that I wanted to apply great meaning to because something really meaningful came about as a result of what I said?

I can’t really know either way because we cannot actually know all of the workings of the universe and the space which surrounds it so I will withhold judgment - I want to withhold judgment since i can’t prove it otherwise. Because of who I know myself to be on one level, I might wish to believe that it was a gift given unexpectedly (which it was) but in this case did it come about through a whispering of words although it still seems so uncanny and improbable to me that it happened at all. Well, perhaps “improbable” would be too strong a word to use, too unrealistic a word to use. Perhaps it comes down to nothing more than two events coinciding because of something two people did and a third not doing. lol Can one call this synchronicity? lol

People do think in terms of a universal mind (not God). Who knows how the universe works in those terms.
Anyway, whether it was supra natural or just plain natural, it was a gift which still keeps on giving in a way. i love a mystery.

Under-standing literally means to get in touch with that, which stands under, or supports that which is above it. (Whatever that is) Rationality is being able to get in touch with that support, or ground. When there is a stress, an angst, then, irrationality sets in. The brain cannot correlate the rational from the irrational. It begins to work in overdrive, and picks up or apprehend events from conscious and sub-conscious stored levels, picking those which are most probable. A lower, or deeper level most probable event, correlated with a shallower, less probable event, connect, and appear to have meaningful and co-incidental value validity.(The most shallow event may not even have any connection to a cognitive -sign, it may be strictly a perceptually patent indication of loosest connectivity. This extreme may be generated by the overtaxation of perception to include all possible signs.

I personally believe, that the paranoid process can generate coincidences which turn out to have totally verifiable validity.

Well, my starting point is in the working of the mind (or the brain). I may be completely wrong, but my tendency is to believe that the cause is within the mind/body. However, I do realize that the brain itself, and how perception works and has evolved, are influenced by laws of nature, some of which are not clearly understood. Who is not to say that the brain is doing what it ought, and that (potential) synchronicity is, after all, a very natural phenomenon, a phenomenon that is happening all around us, all the time. So, in a way, I agree what Fixed said, “…the brain is selective. But not because it is defective, but because that is what brains do, filter - value in terms it can use to sustain itself and justify itself to itself - that is all it does”.

That reminds me of a saying which says that people are not doing anything to nature - nature is doing everything to itself. And yet…

In “The Believing Brain”, Michael Shermer noted this by pointing out that an overactive amygala (fight or flight response) causes a person to see/k patterns and meaning where there are none, (aka apophenia). Because a person is essentially seeing new patterns everywhere, it can either lead to new scientific or artistic discoveries, or, alternatively, schizophrenia, a total break from reality.

This is Jungian Perspective on Synchronicity from a small conference (most of the people are Jungian psychologists/therapists, though there is a couple of scientists present too). I wanted to see what are some current theories are circulating out there coming from this field. There were some interesting concepts presented: such as possible influence of some forms of archaic unconscious communication (this particular explanation was presented in the context of interaction between two people, so I’m thinking perhaps this is some sort of a subset of subliminal communication), the possible influence of human microbiomes, unconscious bias, and Haken-Kelso-Bunz (HKB) equation. This is just some of the theories that were presented, and I think all worthy of considering.

Synchronicity observed in Nature
Looking at it from this way, synchronicity may be an organizing force, which affects both living and non-living matter - but used by life forms as a method of adapting and surviving.

I do agree, however as far as synchronicity goes, it may be more than that. I think seeking improbable connections, new patterns of reorganization may emerge and actually produce changes in the environment. I think Your references to psychic phenomena, if i understand You correctly may be the result of generating actual psychic or physical changes. For instance, have You ever been drawn somewhere, or toward someone, and then something happens, resulting actual changes in Your life?

Here, even if some think it a stretch, may be the efforts to connect differing elements, neither of which can be defined as purely conceptual or perceptual. The anomaly of the de integration or lack of differentiation of this content cannot be described either as a potential aesthetic or, an overt schizophrenia, simply because there is no criteria by which to differentiate them.

Jung in his memoirs, described an experience while playing in his lonely childhood garden, as in Emily Dickinson’s, that while sitting on a rock , he was struck by an overwhelming emotion of not being able to validate, whether he was sitting on a rock, or whether he was the rock upon which he was sitting.

I love it when I hear people say or write that they may be completely wrong or just not sure either way. That’s an open mind. Anyway, I more or less do agree with you here. So much depends on the mind.

This is for me what would make that connection - the interface between the brain and the laws of nature and the universe. There is so much we do not understand concerning the space and the environment and its connection to the brain. Perhaps there is some kind of feedback or signals going on which we cannot on a conscious level be aware of.
Perhaps synchronicity IS a natural phenonomenon but as to whether or not it goes on all the time, who knows? Perhaps that would depend on the individual and how he/she might be “connected” as it were or sense the connections without actually sensing them. Perhaps some people are more malleable or able to go with that push or whatever, even on an unconscious level. I’m having a difficult time expressing what I’m trying to say here.
lol. It is such an interesting hypothesis.

I agree with this but I would rather err on the side of skepticism. At the same time, I just do not want to throw the baby out with the bathwater. And I think that we have to ask ourselves – what are the benefits in believing something other than something else. Sometimes though, something just seems so uncanny as to have no choice but to believe it - but I try not to. But I go on questioning and delving.

Apophenia in relation to evolution and religion. The argument is implying that evolution, by selecting for apophenia, is also selecting for superstition and religion.

i think you hint at the most profound experiences of synchronicity. i also think that your qualification of unlikeliness of causality is not necessary, nor relevant, nor important.

A lot of good responses.

If the mind manifests it and the experience was created by the mind, the experience may be recreated. hmm.

Yes, I think that is what may be happening.

I think it’s similar, except the total merging aspect. I like to see it as a continuous perception loop where the observer sees the act of perception - in slow motion - and perceives the self at both ends of perception loop. Seeing a moment of creation, in action (the mind manifesting it), in hyper slow motion. Like a bat, flying through a cave that knows the wall is there because it can sense its own sound waves reflecting back. A kind of self-referencing. Could it also not happen with events? What happens at that exact moment of synchronicity, and a moment right before that? Could an event be that wall?

This rings true.

Pandora wrote:

What I had experienced actually did take me by surprise but not fully until after the fact - until I had connected the two events. I asked myself how could I not have? At the same time, I realized it could have all just been a fluke. But, are there really “flukes”? Where do they come from? But that’s where the meaning comes in.
I think at the point where we ask ourselves “what does this mean” we are already seeing meaning in it. We just haven’t figured it out though.

I didn’t “try” to tie the two events together - they came together on their own, okay, so how my mind viewed it.

I don’t see fate. I just see what occurs as a result of what we do or someone else does - and that can change. It isn’t written in the stars. I also realized at the time when this was being “offered” to me, for lack of a better word, that i was hesitant. Perhaps it simply comes down to accepting what is in front of you. That’s when syncrhonicity has the ability to enter in and do its voodoo (o/k about the voodoo).

nope, not god. I’m agnostic. If I ever return to seeing a god, it wouldn’t be a personal one either…I think I’ve graduated from that…I’d be a deist.

By deterministic, do you mean pre-determined? I don’t see that either. If there is such a thing as synchronicity, how can it be brought on by something which is pre-determined since synchronicity is a random kind of thing…everything falls into place, comes into being, if not completely by accident, this thing still has to meet up with this other thing and fit neatly into some kind of a groove. Can that be planned? lol
It’s so interesting to me but boggles my mind.

Somehow it is somewhat akin to this, Arc: Everything is somewhat related, or, has relatable potential. In very subtle situations, most of the potential is hidden, or sub-conscious, because of the mind's filtering activity, which cannot deal with everything perceivable at once. In times of extreme awareness, when such filtering activity is suspended, co-incidental, previously unrelated events are connected. Whether they are relevant to each other is not pre set, but is an activity of referentially willing to signify such relevance.

As a consequence, some synchronicity, will turn on the degree of relevance that events can be associated by. The potential significance of any set of co-incidental events is also a matter of degree.

This is why synchronicity has relative force, some overwhelming, and some tenuous. I believe in very loose associations, there is a tendency to look for commonality, and although there is some in any two events, some do not pass the ‘reality’ test. They are just too unrelated to make sense. However, the will can overcome the most tenuous of coincidences, and construct a scenario, where it almost seems as if such coincidences were fated, pre-arranged, or meant to be. When this happens, the forgone conclusion of such synchronous events is no longer on the plane of possibility, but, it becomes a reality, vis, such coincidences, as unreal as they seemed, in retrospect, were meant to happen.

In this view, the will is both, a determined act, and a power to enact it. The power is an energy construct between any events which are actualized from a potential field of 'energy' possibilities.

For anyone who’s interested in exploring synchronicity this is a good book which explains how a mind can produce synchronistic events. The author sees the phenomenon of synchronicity as a mirror of the mind (he does not get too clinical or new agey about it, but approaches it as a mind’s natural pattern-seeking ability, that can be consciously manipulated and explored, through mind “games”). Creating and experiencing synchronicity is like having a dialogue with the workings of your own brain (I see it somewhat similar to exploring one’s dreams because dreams are also mirrors of thoughts and emotions).
SE interaction makes me think of the movie Sphere in which the characters’ thoughts, fears and hopes became manifested in the external world - except in this case - manifested in the form of meaning. (Hence, one of the main rules to follow when playing the SE game is “don’t believe the game you create” - but have fun with it.
