Talib for sure
Do you mean Talib Kweli?
If so, yes, he’s one of the best rappers out there right now. Deep, smart lyrics. I hear he’s going to drop his next album, “The Beatiful Struggle”, on June 22nd. You can bet I’ll be first in line to pick it up (as if anyone else in my area will even be looking for it).
What I heard is that him and Mos Def were going to do an album together. I saw them perform recently and was dumbstruck at the level of lrycics they had. And they were talking about the Israli conflict, something that has been fascinating me for the past few weeks. Talib is one of the best out there. By far in the top 20 of living lyricists right now.
Talib Kweli and Mos Def released an album under the name “Black Star” in 1998. Its short (13 tracks), but brilliant. “Thieves in the Night” is a particularly great track.
I heard they were working on another album together, but so far I haven’t heard anything about a release date.
I have the utter respect for Hip-Hop, I mean it is my culture. But I have been so out of touch. Plus I insist on not reading The Source, XXL, etc… or watch BET or MTV because I feel that hip-hop as a whole makes you dumber. So for as much as I love hip-hop, a dead prez tape and all the Wu-Tang albums have to suffice.
I don’t blme you on The Source, I got a free one-year subscription, and that magazine is hypocritical at best.
Like Ras Kass said in “The Music Business”: “Rap magazines be screaming they keep it real
but keep it fake on the cover
Pulling tennis shoe and clothing advertisements. No wonder”
Anyway, I agree that most of the stuff that gets radio play right now is worthless drivel, but if you dig below the surface a little there’s plenty of good stuff out there. Dead Prez is definately one of them.
Oh, and since you mention Wu-tang, did youcheck out Masta Killa’s new album yet? I just picked it up yesterday. It has a nice old-school Wu vibe to it, although its not quite as strong as some Wu classics like “Enter the 36 Chambers” or “Liquid Swords”.
“When I was young, my father was famous”
did you catch the Shoguns Assasin in Kill Bill 2?
Liquid Swords is one of the illest all time best albums out there.
I didn’t even know Masta Killa came out with an album. I’m still on tical 0: The Prequel right now.
