tattoos: self-destruction or an attempt at bettring one's

are tattoos a self destructing act or an attempt at bettering one’s self (excluding intentions).

I’m just about covered up in tattoos and I don’t think that I’m necessarily “better” because of it. Also, I don’t know if I’d consider it self destructive either. You’d think with as much ink as I have that I’d give a better response huh? I’ll think about it and come back.

An attempt at bettering one’s self.

Definitely not self-destructive, unless you had tattoos on your face of something. If you are ugly, I can understand, and the damage wouldn’t be so bad. Personally, I’d wear a mask if I was ugly (seriously).

There’s nothing ‘destructive’ about a tattoo. Therefore the only other option you’ve given wins by default.

get the mona lisa tatooed on your face and see if you are as pretty…

Why stop with tattoos? There are all sorts of piercing opportunities and in some parts of the world, scarification is all the rage. Why not all three? Then one could claim to be better than better…

Person with tattoo(s) = shallow masochist.

I love tattoos.

In a short while I am about to have the rest of my back done.

( Already has both shoulders tattooed.)

More than anything, it depends on the tattoo and the tattooee. In some cultures, such as Confucian or Jewish, tattoos are streng verboten so anybody with them is basically biting their thumb at their families and tradition – in short, they are badasses. In other cultures, like the Maori, tattoos are a vital part of the coming-of-age process and people who have them are slaves to tradition. In other cultures, tattoos are a symbol of consumerism and people with them are raging tools.

What a tattoo means is entirely dependent upon the cultural milieu.

please elaborate if possible? because masochist has a negative conotation in the online dictionary.

I have a big barcode on the back of my head that’s been there since I was like 19. Also I have a 3 eyed octopus w/ the 3rd eye on fire. Altogether I think there’s about 10 or 11 if you count the one that I got on the bottom of my foot, (most of it has rubbed off over the years).

can you contribute any positive or negative “feelings” towards your tatoos? would you get them again in hind sight?

I like them all. I try to keep them meaningless so that there’s less to regret. I think of them as souveneers from different frames of mind that I’ve held over the years.

The question would then be: is said culture destructive.

Who’s to say I wouldn’t look better?

your optometrist?

I’d always wanted the big Japanese tattoo but since I’m not yakuza or even japanese I always felt like I’d end up being that ‘raging tool’. meh…
