ESPN reports that terrell owens attempted suicide
(for those who don’t know or care, owens is a famous
football player here in america who is as famous head
case, in more ways then one apparently) Owens is wealthy
and famous beyond most people wildest dream and yet
he still tried to commit suicide. I think this leads to a
point which is peace of mind comes within, not with
wealth, power, fame, or any other external trapping,
but from within. Fame, wealth comes and goes,
but peace of mind outlast any momentary fame or glory.
I do agree with the OP that calmness comes from have a philosophy of life, and not from money. This is a small example of how capitalism is a dangerous fantasy.
I’m sure that he’ll do the chat shows and write a book as a form of therapy next
Apparently the so called suicide attempt never happened. Looks like a mixture of pain meds, including generic Vicodan (like most pro football players, he’s perpetually playing hurt- a broken hand at the moment). He was just back on the field practicing today. The guy is way to narcissistic to off himself, although his passing wouldn’t cause much grief.
Maybe … but fame, wealth and power can be a lot of fun … for a time .
And sometimes “peace of mind” isn’t really so peaceful underneath when we use it as a passive alternative excuse against courageously changing those things we can.
But, as for poor Mr. Owens and his famous ego, it is appearing that, at the moment, it wasn’t a suicide attempt.
Best not to rush into judgments of even the most apparently narcissistic.
I think the above quote originally came from someone else but my ex-stockbroker (an extremely wealthy, manic depressive who later suicided) said:
“Money doesn’t buy happiness, but it sure makes misery a lot more fun” and
“I’ve been poor and unhappy and I’ve been rich and unhappy. I prefer being rich and unhappy”
I think these are a honest appraisals from someone who knew what both extremes were like.
