The Angry Fountain of Englewood

I was hanging out with a friend, taking pictures with my new camera  and I really liked this shot.

What do you think?

Your composition needs work. Observe the lines in your image.

A

Lines? There’s water shooting up around the fountain, that might be it. That all I see.

The water creates lines. Images are a series of lines. When you compose your shot, remember to look at the angle you shoot from. For example, shooting the cement wall at the bottom of your shot distracts from what might be a very beautiful image. In fact the wall is what makes your shot very ordinary. We’re not just looking at the fountain, we’re looking at the entire image.

Oh ok, that’s what you mean, Yeah, I see that, first time out with the camera, I’ll get the hang of it.

Thanks for the advise LA.

No problem.

I was also trying to get the shot when my mom was calling me to get me to come home.

She had to go and spoil all your fun!

Take your camera wherever you go. Shoot everything. Shoot your mother.

A

Crop. Just crop and it is perfect!

when shooting at night, I have found a flash rarely produces a desirable effect in a standart shot. Next time you are out at night, and want to photograph a glowing fountain (There are quite a few of them in my small town), disable your flash, open your aperture (drop to the lowest f/stop), stand still, and shoot away.

What took away from the shot the most, was, as liquidangel said, was the framing in general. Don’t take anything I say to heart though, I do music, not visual art

No I’m not taking any of this to heart, I really wanted all your opinions and critizisms, I want to get better, so I need to find out what I can do better.

Thanks all.

gecota, glad you got a camera. Can I ask what kind you purchased?

As for your post…

I think it’s a great start, and you’ve chosen an interesting subject matter. If could make a suggestion though, try either not cutting off the sides of the fountain (situating it more in it’s environment) or getting up much closer to the fountain and really focusing on the water.

A cool thing that you might try doing is to go right up to the small stream of water on the right and get it in focus with the rest of the fountain out of focus behind. A low f-stop (large aperture) will ensure that enough light gets in to make the right exposure but that the fountain behind is just a blure of reddish, pinkish water. You can also play with long exposures to blur the water.

All in all, a great start (as good or better than anything I started out with!)

Thanks you, I’m planning on going back to take some more shots later this week. I’m also going to get some better pictures of some of the sculptures too.

excellent! keep us updated.

cheers,
gemty

Will do.

I just looked back at the title of this thread… silly me to miss it. I like it, I think its clever. It is kind of angry looking!

I had that title in mind when I took the picture.
