God is answer to questions that just can’t be answered from where we are! Humantiy needs god or we would be misserable lost souls. God is a crutch. God is a reason for things that just don’t seem to have a reason. Please give me your opinion.
And this hum-drum redundant answer without actually answering anything is, well, what is the point? Please elborate.
I think you hit the nail on the head (or through the hands) with " God is a crutch".
Thats the way I see it.
Some people when sitting exams will take “lucky” charms, favourite pens etc. These items are a crutch that allows them to regroup and compose their inner strength.
In this way I see religion. It allows people to dig deep in times of trouble. That said though I would never go to war over a stolen lucky rabbits foot
I personally am not religious but will never discount anything.
I am not a religious person. I don’t beleive in god, but if people didn’t we would be lost and misserable. Humans have a need for religion. They need something to fill in the questions that we cannot be answered by us from where we are now.
humans don’t necessarily have a need for God… many people have filled their lives with other meaning…
also, if you do think that people have a need for God an equally acceptable answer as to why this is, is simply because we have a longing to be rejoined with the Greater power that made us (Christianity), is part of us (gnostic, some eastern thought), etc. there could simply be some realization in humanity that God is out that and we simply have a desire to get back to him (Augustine’s neo-platonic thought)
or god could just be a crutch or the opiate of the masses…
Too much evil has been perpetrated on the masses by religion for religion to be good.
Good and Evil is a better watermark than the religions I have investigateed.
Is what you are doing positive or negative?
Are you serving the god of good or the god of evil?
It’s your choice to make in each situation.
using that logic one could probably argue that almost any idea that anyone has had cannot be good… every govt. and system of govt has caused harm, every religion (or at least the followers of every religion), every ideal, every system of looking at the world…
i am exaggerating a bit, but really there aren’t many ideas out there that haven’t caused harm either in and of themselves or through their interpretations
Yeah, that was the problem until I got my own ideas and quit looking for solutions from failures.
If my ideas are right, they should sweep the world clean of all previous philosophies.
How many religions died because of this new christianity crap?
If you know about humanity, which i hope you do, you will know that above all we all have a ego. And for this argument i will create the aggregate ego. We need to believe that there is something better for us out there. Do you think that animal societies have a belief in some kind of God power? Look at the ant, just runs around on instinct, building and collecting. And when you break it down its the exact same thing we do. But when you add GOD into the mix, how we are working for him, to create a blissful afterlife, it give us a meaning. And it would destroy any ego we have to find out our lives are 100% meaningless. God merely creates a meaning to continue or lives. If there were a God, i would hope that he wouldnt let the world get to the condition it in now.
It is exactly because there is a god that this world is in this shape.
Without the option of choosing to do evil, what value does choosing to be good have?
The problem is that currently, and through history, it is acceptable to use violence to achieve your goals.
How do you keep your kids in line?
You threaten some degree of violence/deprivation.
As for the Ant, are you sure you want to use an assumption that the ant has no knowledge of god to advance your position?
Wouldn’t it hold true that we have knowledge/yearning of the existence of the creator, then all his creations would have this same instinct?
The nagging thing about christianity is that they work their whole lives for the rewards of death. This world is unimportant to them because it will pass. Then they stink up the place by passing judgement(hellfire and damnation upon the sinner!) on people who don’t agree.
This is the only life you are gonna get, even if there is an afterlife, isn’t improving this world worth the effort?
And, If you live right here, won’t heaven take care of it’s self?
Perhaps I should’ve specified which religions, as mine, the Church of the Free Born, has specific admonitions against any negative actions, even unintentional ones. As I’m sure others do, too.
Hmm, is it that obvious that im a Catholic lol.
It is one of those situation where in order to agree with one part of the argument you have to agree with another part of the argument. As far as the ant goes, have we ever seen an ant church or fire ants leading their army with a cross or holy effigy?
Science has told us that humans are the only species that ultimately prepares for it death. Not just crawling into a hole when its time. We create wills, buy life insurance and we try and prolong our lives with medical treatments, ever see a bear hospital? Other than the ones we made for them.
So the tough part of this argument is, that if all the creatures on earth dont have the knowledge of God, why do we?
Maybe it was because we were her magnum opus. Why then would Jesus be a human and not some other animal.
So in the end, who or what is God? He’s everything and everyone, I guess.
I don’t know how well versed you are in ant behavior, but I doubt that you interpreted their actions the same way they did.
Logic dictates without ant testimony we can draw only assumptions and not conclusions from the behavior of ants.
If bears had thumbs…
Science told us the world was flat, that the heart didn’t pump blood, that the sun revolved around the earth, and if I’m not mistaken Einstien had a theory or two wrong.
So science would not be the know all be all of any question, though the scientific method is sound. ie. question everything…again.
I was merely using ants as an example, i could have used any animal, ants just seems logical because of there size.
We are lucky to be living when we are, we are after many of the greatest thinkers lived. So we also have the knowledge that some of their idea were and are wrong, like those of the earth being flat.
But the belief in God has been always, and will always.
But I am pretty sure that we are the only species with a defined religious idea. And many religions and ideas at that. There are 1000’s or them, probably more. We take out a lot of actions in the name of God, i doubt other species do that. I’m sure some might have an instinct of a higher power but lack the rational brain power to understand it, heck, we don’t.
