These three videos were made by that dude who tried to kill the Arizona representative Gabrielle Giffords. God, how do idiots like this get guns? What irresponsible prick gave this guy a fire arm? There’s no way someone literally retarded can get a gun license…RIGHT? Does he have some friend or family member that trusts him enough to give him a gun? Can’t they see how fucked up he is? I mean I’m sure it’s not hard to tell…just based on the way he writes. I imagine he talks similarly, or even worse.
Idk why I put this in psychology. If it’s in the wrong place, move it at your will Mods.
What are your guys’ thoughts on this nut, and other nuts of previous years who have done or attempted similar things? Clearly he’s no unabomber.
As an outsider to the USA I am always amazed by their right to bear arms. The last thing any civilized society needs is guns in the hands of unstable people.
I only know a little about the political environment over there, but could some of the extremist commentators, like Glen Beck for example, have influenced this idiot?
One thing I have noticed about commentators with extreme views is that they try and drag out the violent emotions of the populace. We have our own here in Australia called Andrew Bolt. He’s highly abusive and has a bunch of very angry followers.
In Alabama, where I live, you need to fill out a small card, about 3x5 inches which provides the local authorities with all the information that is required for them to license you to carry a handgun concealed. You have to be 21 years old, and not convicted of a felony crime and able to pay the $7.50 fee for a one year license.
All other firearms, as in rifles or shotguns etc, you can purchase at 18 years old and require no permits to carry in your vehicle. The fact that I literally own 37 firearms should be even stronger evidence that literally, almost anyone can have a gun in this country.
Also, yes OP, those videos are ridiculous. Nothing gives me a bigger headache than people who want to be deeper than they are.
Arizona is a state where anyone can own a firearm without a permit. It’s a wild west mentality. Alaska and Vermont are the same, and 18 other states are considering it. This is truly insane all right.
The right to hold arms is the only thing stopping the US from being Mexico, essentially. It’s the only protection against tyranny a country led by a cohort of criminals really has at this point. Every one of these ‘attacks’ is an attack against your fight to have guns. Once they pass that law then blackwater can roll in and skullfuck anyone who disagrees. These events are always perpetrated by MK kids like this one, who was even so astute to his own condition to say outright to teachers and family ‘I’ve been brainwashed. Literally.’ He tried to tell his teachers about the MK ultra program and no one listened.
It will likely (cause it always does) come out in mainstream press that he was in serotonin re-uptake inhibitors which it’s been shown time and time again cause dramatic breaks from reality.
Thanks, I thought about it, but decided to leave it up to you.
You could make an argument that he was not an idiot, but had some sort of deep-rooted psychological problem, then either forum could be the proper venue!
I relate to this mindset somewhat in my past experience with mental illness (although I never thought of planning some sort of attack like this in any serious manner) I think he used to be very intelligent probably, before his mental illness struck him deeply. He obviously suffers from some severe psychosis and was nearly completely detached from reality and is probably highly manic at this time, with a possible deep depression looming on the horizon for him (bipolar as well). Its very possible he is Schizophrenic also. I personally would like attempt therapy on him with some anti psychotic meds to see if any recovery is possible, if not he should be sentenced to death. If recovery is possible where this guy can actually begin to think logically and rationally, then I would have a complete re-evaluation. It would be interesting to see if remorse arises. It should be a deep remorse of course, one in which he becomes probably depressed again… which may ultimately continue the vicious cycle.
So the problem with a case like this though is that he’s in way too deep in whatever delusional world he made for himself and likely due to the nature of the mind which is the same nature in many, most, if not all of us, is that his cognitive bias would probably prevent him from regaining logical and rational thought anymore since he just threw his life away. It would be best for his mind to continue his stay in his disconnected reality. The very fact that his illness went so far as to take him to kill these people, this action, is what possibly will prevent him from recovering. It would be a daunting task to come to grips with his own actions if he is to regain logical, rational thought.
Since he is likely unable to be rehabilitated it would best to kill him… and brutally I would add, but that wouldn’t pass by today’s standards.
I didn’t see Loughner as idiotic at all, just steeped in some extremist viewpoints gleaned from people like David Wynn Miller and others.
The problems as I see them are with lax gun control laws and the failure of our society to provide good, accessible mental health care to its citizens. Add to that the violent and incendiary political rhetoric that gets so much enabling media play, and that makes a formula for what happened Saturday.
You can’t safeguard society from people like this. A person in this mental state can be influenced by anything to do anything at anytime. To attempt to provide some sort of logical system of protection or even an isolated method for a disturbed individual is fruitless, logic and reason do not fix or prevent an illogical and unreasonable mind from doing these things.
this is an awful tragic thing that has happened, for everyone.
we need to be thinking in every way about the crime and how this can be prevented in the future.
Wrong. You can safeguard people and society through thoughtful dialogue designed to create a better system for people like Loughner, to keep guns out of the hands of mentally ill people, and to create a society that is set up to benefit all the people, not just the rich.
I’m not sure what you mean by create a better system for people like Loughner. There may be indicative signs of mental instability but again it may also go unnoticed. Mental illness can strike anyone at anytime, this proves to be difficult to keep guns out of the hands of mentally ill people, perhaps you are proposing to destroy all guns everywhere? A lofty task ;0. To create a society that is set up to benefit all the people, not just the rich. Well that too is a broad generalization, unfortunately, mentally ill people again do not realize what is to their benefit and what is not.
very good question jonquil. i have so many ideas. but where to start. #1-----the public needs to know that most persons
that carry a diagnosis of a schizophrenic disorder are not going to be violent. but if a person has a schizophrenic disorder and is into serious street drugs; then that combination leads to a greater risk of violence. also a persons record of criminal behavior is important.
