The Best and The Worst

Germany produces and has produced the best and the worst.

This is a virtue of it being the edges of the Western Roman Empire, at the extremes. Half digested, with jagged, unnormalized edges.

It has none of the quality control of Rome, but it then also doesn’t have the homogenization that comes with it and prevents the highest levels of genius while insuring that whatever wacky Gothic stuff gets in is mixed with the high quality of Rome.

Genius needs asymmetry, pieces. But that is also where grotesquery comes from.

When it is bad, because of that high quality Roman inherence, it is decidedly bad.

That this may to a lesser extent be true of Holland might explain why it was the non-French cultural capital of the world after the decline of Italy.
