I just today received a birthday present through the post from my significant other who is presently on the other side of the world getting a suntan (she left in the autumn and comes back in the spring so basically she’s going to get nearly 12 consecutive months of good weather - swapping hemispheres every six months seems like a good idea to me) and I must say that both gifts, though small, raised my spirits immensely. The first is something I’ve never seen before:

![](http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a30/someoneisatthedoor/IM000261.jpg)

It is a singing birthday cake candle that plays a tune (I don’t know what tune) when you light it. I’m gobsmacked.

The other present were a pair of odd socks, because I made an life-altering decision some years ago to never care about wearing odd socks in the interests of saving time. Thus I never sort my socks once I’ve washed them - I simply file them in a drawer. Clearly she has noticed this and finds it an amusing or cute idiosyncrasy.

Both wonderful presents. Incidentally my birthday was some days ago so I’m not looking for well-wishers, I simply wanted to share with you a moment of almost pure joy from my life. I am after all quite easy to please as long as there isn’t an argument to be had.

Sometimes we realize that the simple things in life… coupled by the realization that life and love are gifts… sort of… effects… us…

Okay, to satisfy Imp’s pedantic lunacy the other present was an evenly numbered pair of oddly coloured socks…

😃

My avatar is a Big Brother contestant, my s/o is shorter and noticeably more blonde…

Of course, which is why I’ve been so buoyed up by it.

Yes, but it isn’t really a substitute for regular contact. Apparently someone she’s met while over there is an ILPer, though I’ve no idea who.

A little older than last year, but not as old as I’d like to make out. Forgive me for not being more specific.

I hope so too. The very first present she got for me was the book The Dice Man by Luke Rhinehart, which is one of my favourite novels. And a big bottle of Polish vodka (she has a habit of being in foreign countries on my birthday…)

Contrary to what Sartre said, heaven is other people. Human beings are blessed (or cursed) with a mysterious ability to get bored. When you know that someone loves you it is almost impossible to get bored.

What if being bored was like being hungery, but the food was so complex that you couldn’t realy figure out how to eat it all?
