The Black Skimmer - A unique bird

The Black Skimmer is the only bird in the world whose lower jaw is longer than the upper. Their closest relative are Terns, but really, they look like no one else. Seeing them is a weird experince. They are a fairly large bird, 18 inches long with a wingspan of almost four feet. They need this long wingspan, because they have a unique method of fishing. The fly low over the water, with their lower beak in the water, and literally skim fish out of the sea. When that lower jaw hits a fish, they snap their beaks shut, and bingo, fresh sushi!
