Much of the west, America in this case, have always been perplexed by the garments of religious Islamic women. In the bible, Matthew 5:27,28, 27"You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’[e] 28But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart." –http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=47&chapter=5&version=31
I’m not saying that I agree with the way that the Islamic community mandates burqas for women, but I however am Muslim and understand where the justification comes from. The reason I quoted Matthew 5:27,28 is because I perceive that part of the passage to be a justification for full body covering of women. Obviously, lust comes from both genders, but its no secret that men are more lustful and have the upper hand when it comes to pursuing lust. I apologize if this comes out misogynistic. I have come to understand that all monotheistic Abrahamic religions have the same views on sex, no sex before marriage and lust alone is sin, though less heavily punished.
I have not been able to find a specific rule mandating women to wearing burqas outside, but I can understand the political ruling on the matter. Does anyone else believe that burqas are justifiable through religious doctrines, and if Matthew 5:27.28 justifies them as well.
The problem with laws like that is that it encourages people to not control their thoughts. See to me laws are made to keep us from hurting each other right? but, when we make laws that keep us from hurting ourselves then we are coddling, pacifing and weakening the people. We should be responsible for our own thoughts and emotions. When someone dictates and controls these very personal things then they in essence condone the weakness.
Its like this; the law condones the man to have thoughts of sinning because it says he has no control, so women must be fully covered. So instead of teaching and expecting the male to controlhimself, the female is punished for his lack? Would you punish the sister if the brother stole? gods I hope that law does not exist somewhere, if it does let me know cuz I, sure don’t want to go there.
Its a permissable law based upon Gender. Men made the law so that they would not be resonsible for their thoughts, they took the easy way out, the path that did not challenge them morally. It is easier to punish the women than to control their own lust. So really is that moral or is that sinful? I dunno but, laziness and sloth are right up there with the bad things.
I agree with this. I don’t understand why we allow this while we go to war seemingly indiscriminately. Where we should be soft we’re hard and where we should be hard we’re soft. Everything seems completely backwards sometimes.
“I’m sorry that what I’m saying comes out ‘sounding’ that way.”
Here’s a thought as to why: BECAUSE IT IS!
I don’t want your apologies, I want the misogyny to end.
Here’s what you do…YOU try putting on one of those nasty things and then go stumbling about in it, seeing a partial world for the next ten or so years of your life. And no fair cheating, you gotta keep it on when it’s 120 degrees in the shade. Cause, man, you need to cover up them hunky Muslim thighs, or I’m not gonna be responsible for what I THINK or what I DO when presented with the your delectable, irresistable male body. After all, I’m only human (and we females are the weaker ones, you recall). What’s a girl to do? I don’t wanna sin against your conceptual Allah and stuff.
So hide thyself from my sorely tempted eyes, man!
You bring that nonsense to my world, then you get to hear what I have to say about it. As far as I’m concerned, it’s atrocious. I’ve had it up to here with this protection of a ‘culture’ that upholds this symbol of female oppression so blatantly when you live here in the western world, where so many women have fought so long and hard to eliminate that crap. What I wish is that every single western woman would vow to tear those things off of the poor fools walking around that have been so badly culturally brainwashed that they actually believe themselves to be the filthy temptresses they’re conceived to be by men. My god, I even saw a woman roller skating (!) in one a couple of months ago. My blood pressure must have gone up ten points.
I don’t think justification has anything to do with it. I think it’s a matter of force, tradition, and the sentiments that develop through tradition. Men, clearly having more force over women throughout history subjugated them to their will. Over the years the subjugated woman became the traditional role of women, and not just men but even women thought this was the woman’s place in society, and as would be expected they would be shocked to see any other role a women might play, as is apparent by American women’s reaction to Islamic women’s roles. These American women see the women of another culture subjected to another role as out of place, and feel it wrong. But it’s neither wrong nor right, because neither women nor men have an absolute role in society.
Religion and scripture is irrelevant here. They’re just tools the men who wrote them used to make traditional roles “official” so to speak, or as separate from them, but I wouldn’t say these mores originated with them. History has shown that mores precede religion.
