The end of ILP: Closing time.

Dear all,

Please know that I write this message with a heavy heart.

Over the last few months it has been clear that I have not had time to dedicate to the running of ILP. Certain areas of my life have required a great deal of focus and attention and I have not been able to give the amount of time and effort to maintain ILP as a thriving philosophical community.

I promoted xanderman and tentative to the position of admins and over the last few weeks they have done a good job. However, ILP has always been my brainchild and I feel it cannot go on unless I am at the helm. And so it is with great regret that I shall close ILP next week.

Thanks for all the good times and all the wonderful posts that have been contributed. You made ILP what it was. Feel free to leave your parting goodbyes here.

For the last time,

All the best,

Ben

Everything is reminding me of a song lately, so I post one at the bottom for the occasion.

Meanwhile, Ben, are you going to take the site down or what?

Also, have you considered getting some mods that are of like mind with yourself? This has nothing to do with the ones that you have, but just has to do with keep to your “mission statement” so to speak. Perhaps new blood will help.

Song:

Nick Cave - The Weeping Song Lyrics
Go son, go down to the water
And see the women weeping there
Then go up into the mountains
The men, they are weeping too
Father, why are all the women weeping?
They are weeping for their men
Then why are all the men there weeping?
They are weeping back at them
This is a weeping song
A song in which to weep
While all the men and women sleep
This is a weeping song
But I won’t be weeping long
Father, why are all the children weeping?
They are merely crying son
O, are they merely crying, father?
Yes, true weeping is yet to come
This is a weeping song
A song in which to weep
While all the men and women sleep
This is a weeping song
But I won’t be weeping long
O father tell me, are you weeping?
Your face seems wet to touch
O then I’m so sorry, father
I never thought I hurt you so much
This is a weeping song
A song in which to weep
While we rock ourselves to sleep
This is a weeping song
But I won’t be weeping long
But I won’t be weeping long
But I won’t be weeping long
But I won’t be weeping long

ben, are you seriously shutting down the site permanently?

??

No I talked to Ben… it’s for real :frowning:

Five Stages of Grief

  1. denial (my last post)
  2. anger or resentment
  3. bargaining (the one before)
  4. depression
  5. acceptance

See, I’m out of order, and unconventional!

Actually, I believe, but it is kind of amusing that it was posted on April 1st.

Still, there should be a way to keep it on track, I mean the frickin’ BBC was just talking about it.

Is it perhaps co-incidental that Ben posted a very similar post as this last April Fools Day?

I like Ben, so whatever he’s up to is fine with me.

Hello F(r)iends,

Ben has agreed to sell me ILP for 12,000 GBP. The money will go towards paying off his school loans and towards various iPod accessories.

Soon, you will see the sign UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT on the front page of ILP.

As for my Mission Statement: I bring you fear, famine, pestilence and…

VIOLENCE!

-Thirst4Evil

That’s what I said to him.

He said it would be some sort of philosophical irony.

Ben, I will miss you and ILP. I wish you the very best. Hum, if a certain other soul takes over I will continue playing on BBC and other sites. Good luck fella, have a wonderful life and I hope you fondly remember us.

With regrets,

aspacia

Damn, Ben you dog, it is April Fool and I forgot last year. I am so f@#$% naive.

Smiles,

aspacia

Interesting thought Thirst4TakeOvers. I’d like to see what price this site would bring on the market.

I’d want AT LEAST 12,000 GBP from Ben before I took it on – that’s for sure.

It’s true I fear. Ben is indeed shutting down ILP.

In other, totally unrelated developments, I am becoming both an atheist and a communist.

Hello F(r)iends,

KM, ILP is worth a lot more to me than the actual market value… As far as I am concerned, I got a steal.

-Thirst

I’m not sure if this is all for real, but I suppose I have to trust ben, OG, etc.

I haven’t posted much on ILP, maybe 50 or so times between a couple of usernames, but I’ve been what you might call a “lurker,” and just watched and read all of the threads for a year or two now. It’s been enlightening, and encouraging. Thanks to all. And if this is a joke, we’ll give ben an Oscar or something.

hmm… it seems that there would be ways to keep the site open pretty easily without ben as supreme-chancellor-for-life. either way, whether ilp gets closed, or whether it’s a joke, both will make me a little angry but i guess it happens. this site really took the tiny amount of interest in philosophy i started out with and got me so intrigued with it, to where i started making friends read things i found about religion or philosophy and telling me what they thought, and culminating a couple weeks ago where i told everyone i knew about “Snakes On A Plane” and convinced them to see it with me when it comes out.

But I wonder… why is this announcement in ‘Mundane Babble’? Why couldn’t you just post it up in the ‘Announcements’ and/or ‘Site News’ sections? #-o

:astonished:  :frowning:  are you guys kidding??? please say yes. If not then, i really dont’ know what to say. I mean what are you guys planning to do for your daily dose of philosophy? This site is like coffee to me, and now without it… so do you guys have any other sites that we can go to? I know there’s no substitute for ILP but is there any other philosophy site that we can kind of keep in touch and still keep philosophy alive? :frowning:
