Mastery has really gone through as many stages as weapons have: Broadsword, shuriken, scalpel… One of the big trends, yet least publicized, is toward more sophistication and higher efficiency.
One example: Voltaire spoke about social justice, Foucault spoke about the genealogy of power.
Efficiency has been given a reasonable examination. Weber was the first I know of to examine it. More recently there’s been Ritzer on the McDonaldization of society.
