This is an illusion in the minds of the people that machines can reduce the importance the use of human labor. On the contrary, the opposite is true.
Let us deduct one example.
Think about any means of transport; two wheelers, four wheelers, trains, ships, planes etc. These all are machines thus theoretically, they should reduce the human labor. But, did that actually happen so far! On the contrary, the invention and use of travelling machines increased the use of human labor many times in the comparison of old times when we were using hoeses or carts as travel means.
The same applies to the majorities of the industries; pharmaceuticals, computers, , hospitality, education etc. There may be some industries (like food and i am not sure about those too) which are exceptions to this but generally the advancement of technology increases the use and importance of human labor, not decreases.
This misperception about human labor arises when we start comparing the portion of human labor in any industry with very immediate past. Some new machines reduce the need of human labor prime facie but that does not happen overall and in the long term. Computers reduces the manual labor but they also gives birth to hardware and software industry, which again consumes more human labor.
Thus, this cycle continues with the invention of every new machine or technology.
Well, i am not sure what exactly you mean by that. I think that this trend has been there all along through the history, and will be there in the future too. Yes, there maybe be some temporary ups and downs.
