the good guy with a gun argument

So you judge people by their looks?

I don’t wish to disappoint you, MD, but I was being a tad - what’s the word? - facetious? ironic?

You posted a ‘video’ which contained photographs of lots of folk that you don’t know from Adam. You made a statement about those strangers, concerning their past, or possibly their future behaviour… Based upon nothing but their appearance - “looks”.

Doesn’t that seem a little bit silly to you?

“America is sick and her sickness endangers the whole world. Given America’s immense power and resources, a cure must be found within. The first thing that is needed is an education teaching that hate must be avoided, that excellence does not consist in violence. To achieve this change of outlook is an immense task which America’s “Radicals” must attempt to carry out. Whether the necessary heroism will be forthcoming, I do not know. We can only hope that it may be so.”
— Bertrand Russell, Bertrand Russell’s America: Volume II (1945–1970), Part II. The Increase of American Violence, Published in truncated form as The Ethos of Violence in The Minority of One, January 1965, p. 607

K: Socrates felt that a philosopher was a doctor of the soul…
and the soul is sick here in America… that much is clear…
but to cure any illness, including soul sickness, we need to find
the cause of this soul sickness…and once an illness has been
been diagnosed, then and only then can a cure be found…

Yep, good guy with a gun is epic. Because the only thing that will stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. Facts.

Maybe its police, maybe its your neighbor with his or her conceal carry permit who drops the assailant and saves your life. Or maybe it’s you, if you actually bothered to take responsibility for your own life and the lives of others around you by getting trained and certified to carry a self-defense pistol.

Imagine idealizing being defenseless as a form of… defense. Highly odd. Only the pathologically Stockholm-syndromed could manage that level of self-depravity.

K: and yet completely avoided the fact that in Texas, in Uvalde,
over 300 policemen with far more guns and more lethal guns, refused
to enter a schoolroom with only one shooter with limited arms…
for over an hour, they stood outside waiting…
guns don’t protect anyone… the police actions in TX show us that…

as for protecting myself, today I am 63 and I have traveled to some
very shady areas at night, south side of Chicago, NY, Paris,
LA, SF, London, Italy… and I have not needed a gun…

I have no need for fake “protection”… in fact, I would argue that
that having a gun gives one a fake sense of protection… you would do stupid
things thinking a gun will protect you…

without looking it up, name one case, where a “good guy with a gun”
has actually protected anyone? and I can tell you that statistically,
it is far more likely that you will accidentally shoot someone before
you save someone in a “good guy” situation…

from 2011 to 2020, there were a decrease the number of accidental gun
deaths from 591 to 535 death’s … per year… and how many “good guy”
lives were saved? I am pretty sure it wasn’t over 5 people… so, is 535 deaths
equal to the less than 5 people saved?
