It comes as no great surprise to most that have visited ILP for a while that there is another dimension to this site. It is unseen and, until recently, never spoken about.

I realized that there are, in fact, some horny perverts that need more than platonic love with their philosophy… ho ho ho.

Rather than believe that all that goes on here is semi erudite discussions of esoteric topics, will anyone else admit to using ILP to get their freak on?

Of course, the hidden world of ILP is the private message feature, where I am certain Detrop, for example, made his offers for free candy until he found a kid with a sweet tooth.

This is not to say that private messages are used entirely for romance. The Mundane mafia couldn’t have sustained itself as long as it did without private tells, nor could several of the smaller cliques that have come and gone, their particular sycophants having stopped posting long ago.

However, the pond scum that once dominated much of the discussion no longer post here (praise Jesus), and my interest is not in them, rather, I wonder who else uses private messages here as a mechanism to further a relationship with a particular poster or posters. And by relationship… I mean something more than just being friendly.

Some examples would include Dunamis and Liquid Angel, whom I suspect quite strongly had something together. Certainly mastriani and Faust had an impressive mutual appreciation society going on… such that some kind of homo erotic love wouldn’t be out of the question. I suspect james no. 2 planted some seeds in Embracetrees, and I know for a fact that marie/Arendt was involved with Monooq, Detrop, and myself. (she got around). I also flirted with Sarax for a while, until it became clear that she was saving her love for george galloway in the British Parliament (kidding about that galloway part).

Now, having disclosed that, I wonder who else has used private messages at ILP to get closer to another member (pun intended).

I will also hereby wager 10 U.S. dollars that no one will mention the name: Aspacia

On the one hand I picture a happy cult forming of philosopher free-love. They meet up by common interest and sanctify their cyberian singles bar as we converge toward a social movement.

On the other hand I picture an office of scientists with a couple once-great-researchers bouting out their problems of passing on venereal diseases, attacking eachother’s work, and ruining once controlled and carefully designed experiments.

I suppose both pictures have some truth. Platonic love doesn’t satisfy human need. Those with great interest in the forum will utilize it for more than just its root purpose (even though perhaps nobody really knows what that is). PMs are important to privacy, they’re also a great opportunity for cowardly trolls to hit on everyone without exposing their colours. They’re also a way to lose good discussion outside of some minds that would be useful to them or could benefit from them.

They have their place.

I almost never PM. I think it’s nice to live under the scrutiny of the world. It’s not always good for self esteem. But “The unexamined life is not worth living.”

If there is one thing more absurd than conversing with strangers on the internet, its conversing with strangers in PMs about other strangers on the internet.

I have no time for cliques or gossip groups or little clubs or any of that bullshit. I have always been anti-social (not anti-social…but anti-dumbass…which kinda narrows it down) and I thought that should I find a forum with “philosophers” I might make a few friends. I haven’t, but I have met a sweet young lady who I shall commit to in good time.

So in a sense, my mission was successful, and when I am finally with my girl, I shall be rid of these forums for all eternity. I might put aside a few months to fuck with the Nietzscheans since this has become somewhat of a hobby for me, but that’s it. I would fuck with the capitalists too…but they can’t even get there own arguments straight.

True. I used to have a cult for Detrop/dhjtnergb. I wrote his name on a rock and his posts on a post and danced around them for a bit. But then he didn’t answer and I stopped believing that he exists.

I also had a short-lived affair with Mr Predictable and even offered my company, should he transgress the borders of my country. That didn’t work out.

I asked Polemarchus once something about a quote of his. The sheer erotic charge of talking privately about Wittgenstein is enough of an afrodisiac to get you going for a day and we’ve been secret lovers ever since, cause by golly there’s nothing like a furtive PM on a sunny afternoon to stir things up between two posters.

With Tab it’s been on and off. He’s a busy man, but my God the sexual undertones in Dawkins, you wouldn’t believe. How is life, Tab.

The steadiest relationship I’ve developed is by far with SIATD. We PMd and e-mailed and brought together two worlds that were once apart and plotted and schemed. All in secret of course, like hidden lovers cause that’s what we must be if we exchange PMs, right ? Two bad I’ve been busy at school lately, otherwise we would have been already married.

Not always–I have only had one poster PM to bitch at me- hum, and two moderators to complain – The rest have been quite positive, yes Gate, quite positive. One was a fellow gun enthusiast, the other a moderator who wanted to meet me for drinks-female.
