Sometimes I have this passing thought, … thought I’d catch it and write it down before it gets away. The unfortunately titled “Mahavishnu Orchestra” is really good. I wish I knew of some Christian music of that variety. This band was recommended to me by De’trop, with another band I also enjoy – and since then I have not expanded my collection of that variety of music, but have been wanting to. I like to pretend the “Lord” being spoken of in “Visions of the Emerald Beyond” – is my Lord… I don’t know for sure who they are really referring to, but it doesn’t really matter. If you know of any Christian artists like this, please (times a million) recommend them to me. I just started listening to Christian music a couple years ago, and so don’t know the ins and outs. Someone who plays that kind of music in the secular world needs to get converted and take the world by storm! Or maybe there’s loads of it out there and you will have the privilege of introducing me to it. I know it will be life-changing! 😃 ---

Thankyou. I’ll try to listen to them at Beardsley’s, my computer is taking too long to load it, though I did hear some Hillsong United! Before I was a Christian I couldn’t stand the music for the same reason you mentioned. After I became a Christian, I couldn’t stand the abundance of negativity in secular music, and it didn’t take too long to warm up to and eventually acquire a taste for Christian lyrics. I don’t like Christian music with lyrics I can’t understand. But I do love Christian music with edgy, powerful (like God) instrumentals… as long as the lyrics are intelligible. Just in case more clarity is required (if the two bands you recommended don’t turn out to be quite what I’m looking for) … my favorite tracks on “Visions of the Emerald Beyond” are 5: Pastoral, 11: Pegasus, and 12: Opus 1 (though I love every track) – and these three tracks represent what I’m really looking for in Christian music instrumentals. If that helps fine-tune your recommendations, feel free to suggest more. I really super-appreciate it. 😃😃😃 ---

Ichthus, I’m terribly confused. How can you like Mahavishnu Orchestra (one of the baddest jazz-fusion bands to ever exist), but willingly listen to Motley Crue and Skid Row? You were willing, right? I didn’t know any better (but, I will admit, I still like some of it, but I don’t seek it out). [deleted long, boring reminiscence (sp?)] The only thing I ever listened to (and still listen to) that came anywhere near Mahavishnu Orchestra was Pink Floyd… and that’s still not close. I will get “Apocalypse”, thankyou. If there’s no negativity in the lyrics, you will have made my decade (musically). I remember Stryper (the name, but not the music). The picture reminds me … My next door neighbors were in a Christian hair band (no label) that played in my church for my birthday. I don’t like Petra-style music these days… though they are still played on Christian music stations. I hear a lot of Christian music that you can tell is inspired by secular music. I’m not a music history buff but I’m betting the reverse is not as often true, at least not in recent days. I pray that changes. Sorry, but my computer is too slow to check out that video. Does Zappa have any strictly instrumental (and good) albums (I suspect not! har har)? What you said about love songs. I think Christian love songs are completely different than secular love songs. I doubt Zappa was talking about Christian music. And, I agree with him about the secular love songs – it’s partly why I avoid secular music. Most of those songs are not very positive… they’re about heart break and infidelity. Who wants to cram their head full of that? Not me. On second thought, Zappa would’ve prob’ly thrown all the love songs, positive and negative, secular and Christian, into one category, just to be … Zappa.
