The Origin of the Comic

Nietzsche dwelt upon this in a nice passage:

[Human, All too Human, passage 169]

Certainly this would seem to fit with Nietzsche’s stoical philosophy, hinting at the notion that the more frightening somethingis, the more potential it has to create harm, the greater potential it has for comedy. Pain, in particular the mental anguish of other people, is funny. Drunks are funny because they might at any point fall over and wet themselves. Nutters are funny precisely because they are unpredictable and potentially very dangerous.

So perhaps in the decades to come we will look back at the Holocaust, at fundamentalist terrorism, at men getting hit in the testicles with footballs, and laugh.
