The Persistant Smile

I smile slightly as I can feel a shift. The shift itself is in my body but it is felt within the universe - by myself. Subtle clouds of meaning seem to gather overhead. It is getting dark; it will be raining soon.

“It’s getting dark”

“I know… it’ll be raining soon”

I looked to my companion worriedly as he had clearly felt it as well. So Why do I smile? Something is odd here, something I can’t yet seem to put my finger on.

“Do you know where we are?”

“Yeah… well” my companion paused, looking around a bit. “I have a pretty good idea…” he said, trying to convince himself.

I took this time to take a look around as well. I had been all along of course; no one simply walks through life without looking, but what was it I was looking for?

“We need a way home”

The clouds make a sound overhead, a type of prethunder. The last bit of light is quickly fading from the sky. The smile persists.

“I know, I’m looking!”

“Yeah well look harder! We’re in the middle of fucking nowhere and you’re smiling.”

I became aware of the first drop of rain well above the earth - in fact I couldn’t even see myself at this point. I hovered above it as it fell, watching the pristine, accelerating nature of the collection of water which was only possible due to the dust deep inside.

“Watch out” I said, sweeping my friend aside with my arm.

“Wh-”

He tried to respond to what must have seemed like a bizarre action as the drop of rain fell past his face. I watched as the two color-spotted spheres rolled from top to bottom, his vision intently locked on the small shimmering object as it fell.

The droplette hit the dry earth with a force equal to its perceived weight in gold. Dust enveloped both of us; the small coarse material obscurred my friend from vision. It seems I’ve already forgotten his name…
