The Philosopher, disappointed with systems and superstitions but still persevering in the ways of the world, should imitate the sidewalk Pyrrhonism exhibited by the least dogmatic of creatures: the prostitute. Detached from everything and open to everything; espousing her client’s mood and ideas; changing tone and face on each occasion; ready to be sad or gay, being indifferent; lavishing sighs out of commercial concern; casting upon the frolic of her superimposed and sincere neighbor and enlightened and artificial gaze-she proposes to the mind a model of behavior which vies with that of sages.
To be without convictions in regard to men and oneself, such is the high lesson of prostitution, peripatetic academy of lucidity, marginal to society–as is philosophy. “Everything I know I learned in the School of Whores!” should be the exclamation of the thinker who accepts everything and rejects everything, when, following their example, he has specialized in the weary smile, when men are to him merely clients, and the world’s sidewalks the marketplace where he sells his bitterness, as his companions sell their bodies.
–E. Cioran, from “A Short History of Decay”
In my experience, this is a mischaracterisation both of philosophers and of prostitutes.
I will say this for prostitutes - in all, they serve humanity more than most philosophers have.
Good point of the week.
We should ask oldtimer, he has specific knowledge in this area.
For myself, my own cost benefit analysis/risk assessment of prostitution has kept me away from purchasing from those particular vendors.
I can neither affirm or dissent.
You can spare $100, surely, Mast ![]()
Prostitution is about selling bodies and life.
It’s allot like the capitalist meat-market, and the swet shops, and everything else like that, which supposedly sells and owns life, except in this case it’s the sale of sex.
Philosophers today are seeking wisdom in the wrong places.
Ancient philosophers were the sages, who traveled the world, and had direct experience with nature, and that is how they got their true wisdom. Instead, the modern “philosopher” reads books and talks to people, so that he is absorbing culture instead of nature, and as he becomes wiser, he generally becomes more stupid, also, because nature is wiser than man.
I’m with Dan on this one.
This is one of those rare occasions where I disagree with Dan~. Prostitution, usually, is about renting bodies. At least in the US.
It would be a rare individual indeed that functions without agenda. In that sense, all are prostitutes and it doesn’t make any difference whether I’m selling widgets, sex, or ideas. We serve ourselves and the rest is window dressing.
The likelihood is though, after having me for $100, it would be so bad, she would ask for another $100 to help pay for therapy …
Not a good investment for me really … ![]()
