The Philosophy of Organized Labor

New figures from the U.S. Census Bureau today show that the middle class received the smallest share of the nation’s income since these data were first reported. The middle 60 percent of households received only 45.7 percent of the nation’s income in 2011, down from the historical peak of 53.2 percent in 1968.

There are many reasons for that decline: stagnant wages, more wealth and income going to the richest among us, globalization, the Great Recession and more.

But writers David Madland and Nick Bunker at the Center for American Progress Action Fund say:

There is another often overlooked dynamic: the decline of labor unions….Over the past several decades, the decline in the unionization rate tracks almost perfectly with the decline in the share of income going to the middle class.

My thesis for this thread: The philosophy of modern, legally recognized Organized Labor agreements created what America understands as the middle class.

The philosophy of Organized Labor needs to be more widely understood & accepted in order to recreate America’s middle class.

I was once a member of an ironworker’s union. It’s pretty much a scam dude. The commercial for it looks great, but if your dad and granddad didn’t work there too, then they only give you about 2 days a week of work, then they lay you off immediately and tell you to go and get unemployment, then they might call you back for two days of work. Plus they want you to go to class and learn all kinds of common sense stuff, so it actually takes up alot of time, and if you divide the money you get paid over all the hours you’re there, paid and unpaid, it’s really not that good a deal unless you’ve got a connection in the system to get a good job.

Some guys go down there with no skills and can be making 90k in 3 or 4 years, most of them get about 400 a week by the time they send em home early, tell him not to come in, then lay him off again.

Bill, your idealism is touching. It brings to mind thoughts of the innocence of a child. But your view of how the world works in inaccurate my friend.

you also have too many threads on the same subject, to be honest. How about one in the academy, and one in this section (for less refined discussion)?

I approach the concept of the spiritual aspect of Organized Labor from different angles.

The philosophical concept that I have developed is amazing to me.

The Way represents the penultimate philosophical pinnacle of my life.

There are sooooo many ways to touch this amazing philosophy that I get more & more worked-up EVERY time I begin to write about it.

THANK YOU for all of your positive responses.

It is posts like these that continue to urge me to keep writing!
