the power of prayer

how much power is there in prayer…
how does it help…can it be a problem

The “Lord’s prayer”, offered by Jesus, has been used in 12 step rehab programs.

It doesn’t help.

What helps is sacrifice.

You have to give something to the gods, or the universe, or your subconscious, however you want to interpret what you address as the higher being. You have to show that the fulfillment of your wish is worth something to you.

If you think god should grant your prayers for free, then that’s fine, that’s also a belief. But it’s usually held by sad people.

Give and you shall receive.

I think it is a big problem…people are leaving things up to god…that they need to do

Disirregardless of whether or not it helps directly, wouldn’t mindfulness of the prayer being prayed have some impact on one’s own mentality?

“Lead us not into temptation” seems to me to be a powerful thought by itself

According to Wiki, the sentence “Lead us not into temptation” has several possible interpretations. Literally, the statement contradicts James who declares that God does not tempt anyone. The sentence could be read–Leave us not in temptation.

maybe we are praying to ourselves…

So there is no higher Self?

you tell me

Higher selves–Nature, the Universe, The God of religions, reality as one sees it., etc, etc.

my main point—we are praying for things that a higher power cant do for us…

Higher power can’t do it? You negate all the twelve-step programs that have done much good for individuals and communities. Even Carl Jung was an advocate of AA.

ier there are some things only we can do…and help from friends at aa

I’m aware that there are things only we can do; but the folks at AA believe in the necessary help from a higher power for things we seem unable to do. The higher power does not have to be a god. It relies on the admission that the hermetically sealed I is incapable of help.

I know of some guys that do it alone but its very hard…

Do what alone? Give up an addiction or learn to live with an addictive nature?

what exactly do you mean…learn to live----

According to AA, once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic. One just learns to not give in to the urge to drink alcohol, and is always only one drink away from backsliding.
