When ever I say I beleive in the power of the mind people seem to support that Idea, saying that the mind is a great thing indeed, but when I hint to the idea of something being psycho-somatic they look at me like I just insulted them by saying that they were faking it.
What I’m currious about is why is their a diffrince between the two, the power of the mind to affect the body can work just as easily to harm as it can to help so why would they be any diffrent.
my appologies, not many people really know what it means, Psycho-mind, somatic-material and/or body, it’s used in medicine to describe illnesses with a mental cause. it was also used to describe the placibo effect where at times taking a sugar pill can have the same effect as the actual medication when it is treated as the medication.
Not knowing something dosen’t make you stupid, not asking does.
People are reluctant to admit fault. Psycho-somatic ailments are in some ways a fault.
The same is true of confabulations, a similar but distinct phenomenon. Confabulations are invented stories that people use to explain phenomena that they do not know the true cause of. An example is stroke or injury victims who have lost the ability to move a limb, but who will swear that they are choosing not to move it.
I have commented to people before that their feelings or impressions might be the work of confabulation, e.g. “you’re sad because you’re PMSing, not because your coworker is being mean to you.” People don’t respond well to that, because they like to believe that they know what is going on with them, why they do the things they do. A lot of the time, it’s not the case, but we delude ourselves because it’s practical to do so.
People are afraid to admit they don’t know because now you have to look and find out. We rather take easy explanations rather than figure out the real reason. eg people go to the doctor with a cold and rather than find out what can prevent it or what has caused it they take the medicine and leave. That is how society does and people follow. Why not find out what causes crime, what conditions cause crime and address those issues rather than incarcerate? It’s easier to incarcerate and its profitable.
I suppose that is more true than I would like, I am hard to admit my own flaws and I am trying to. It still troubles me how people will try to claim the good without acknowledging the bad.
The mind has great power but why do we often only acknowledge the posative, wouldn’t it make more sense to acknowledge the negative and learn from it?
I know when I went to the doctor that I didn’t want medication he didn’t beleive me, I had to find another doctor who would help me solve my problem rather than cover it up. it seems like it is accepted that people do not want to know, and so those who do are penalized for it.
this seems troubling to me but I suppose it may just be one of those things we can’t change.
