The Root of Affliction

When the objective things are not as good as one’s subjective desire, one will feel affliction. To get rid of affliction, there are two ways: one is reducing one’s subjective desire to approach the objective things, and finally unite subjective and objective to be one, it is a spiritual way, and religions take this way; another way is trying to change the objective things to approach one’s subjective desire, and finally unite objective and subjective to be one, it is a substantial way, and science takes this way.

The spiritual way is reasonable and feasible, but it is a negative way. It takes nirvana as the ultimate goal; there isn’t any subjective desire any more, accordingly, there isn’t any affliction. But actually, it is an eternal death state without any vitality. Metempsychosis is gone, affliction is gone, but life is gone too.

The substantial way looks good, but actually, by this way, one cannot get the ultimate state forever, accordingly, it is impossible to get rid of affliction completely by this way. People’s desires are endless, but the ability of science is limited, whatever how quick science develops, it cannot satisfy people’s desires after all.

Both the spiritual way and the substantial way are not satisfied, we need a better way out. Internal Cultivation unites the spiritual way and the substantial way, it exceeds all the religions and science. It focuses on life cultivation, it intervenes spirit and substance. Life comes from the one and only congenital Qi (origin Qi), the one and only congenital Qi come from the Dao. In the final analysis, Internal Cultivation is just cultivating the one and only congenital Qi, when one’s body transforms into the one and only congenital Qi, he unites to the Dao, he is able to transform at his pleasure, and his life will be immortal, accordingly, he is able to change the objective things at his pleasure, so that the subjective and objective unite to be one, and affliction is gone forever. It is completely different with eternal death – nirvana.

What a remakable thread!!!
Li Jiong,
Thanks for your thoughts. In the West a lingering dualism based on thoughts of such philosophers as Descartes, Hume and Kant, and religious notions of bifurcation of humans and their environment, as if the latter is corrupt and corrupting, keep us still from realizing our natural place as parts of a whole, as constituents of a biosophere.
The oriental concept “Tat tvam asi” (thou art that) has only been recognized by a few Western religious mystics and very few Western philosophers (Meister Eckhardt, Benedict Spinoza). But the saying is essential for our future survival as humans. We must come to understand that there are no divisions of subject and object, of knower and known, of being and becoming, of body and mind, of mind and spirit. There is only the path of growth and development (Goethe) in which we evolve eugenically or dysgenically according to our ability to assess taught beliefs, to accept the pains and sorrows of uncertainty that inevitably accompany our excursion into the unknown and to recognize our ecological dependency.

that sounds awesome, but can it actually be done?
I mean, I internally cultivate myself…
but … I can’t change objective things at will :astonished:

Hi Ierrellus,

Thank you for your understanding and I agree with your view completely.

If you internally cultivates yourself properly, first, you will improve your own body and mind; little by little, when your level is higher and higher, you can also improve the environment naturally, you will improve the energy and information around, your family, your relations, your friends, and all people around you will be all naturally benefited, their health will be improved, their temperament will turn to good, their careers will be naturally improved, but they will not know what causes those improvements, they will just naturally love you more and more…

Reminds me of the story of Soddom and Gamorah where one righteous man is capable of ‘saving’ an entire city.

Living in harmony with self and other is contageous. Thanks, Li Jiong for the web site.
