The Soul? AI?

I’m new, and this is going to be about as general as possible, but I’m just curious if anyone’s tuned into the movie I, Robot, and felt the heavy hand of philosophy in it in relation to Artificial Intelligence and what defines a soul and emotions? Any thoughts? (either on the movie, as in…you’re thinking too much kid…it’s just a movie , or on the subject of souls and A.I.?)

the Sheep? C’est un pedazo de informacion interesante.

I have Not seen I, Robot. I will though!!!

Is this movie based off of Isaac Asimov’s book of the same title?

As for the soul…
I invision the brain as this powerplant which, at its heart, has this ball of energy. That is the soul. The battery for the brain. That which is, but has yet to be measured on a physical level. I feel that there is something more going on inside my thought-organ than chemicals interacting with different brain tissue to produce electrical signals for bodily communication. The soul is either embedded in the architecture/program of the brain or something involved with the ‘energy’ that is consciousness. I don’t think that anything produced by humans will be able to come close to the beauty and mystery that is referred to as the soul, consciousness, spirit, chi, ka, etc… Chaos is human. The search for perfection is insane. Utopia is not possible. We are prone to error and therefore anything we create will reflect that. Never will we humans come close to creating something as wonderful as that which is in motion already. It boggles my mind to think of how one would go about programming a soul, but I really don’t know enough to go beyond these petty ambiguous ramblings.

I have to say I enjoyed the movie a good story and the special effects helped shape the world they lived, which is nice to see as they’re not many movies these days are like that. On a whole the movie puts forward the common idea that emotions are better then rational logic, along with the counter idea that emotion without logic are just as dangers, as emotion should have some basis on fact and not just unfounded beliefs.

Some spoilers follow…

The movie puts forward the idea that emotions are better then rational logic. This being the main gripe Wil has against the robots, hence his overly emotional reaction to robots. Example the robot that had the woman’s handbag, despite the logic that no robot has ever committed a crime Wil still believes that the robot is stealing the bag and not returning it, pure emotion.

While the logic of the three laws at first glance make sense, when examined by a computer AI which has reached a certain level of consciences it was able to draw a new unintended meaning from them. Because of its lack of emotions it was unable to understand the true intended meaning. That’s where Sonny was different from the others; he was able to use logic and emotion in making a choice so is more human like therefore better able to relate to humans.

As for AI and Soul that comes down to your religious beliefs. Why can’t an AI have a soul? Must you be human to have one? Or does the fact that you’re self-aware i.e. conscious, ‘cogito ergo sum’ I have experiences therefore I can contemplate my existence (my translation), ‘I think therefore I am’ is too literal and doesn’t quite do the saying enough justice. I believe self awareness is enough to entitle you to what is called a soul; I see no difference between a Biological Machine and a Silicone one, as too many judge the book’s cover and not its content.

how lovely that such petulant things as the media don’t invoke any philosophical thoughts for you at all. I suppose that makes you very advanced in your thinking? or perhaps you simply fail to see the fact that philosophy is present even in a stupid movie, or an opinionated reply on a forum. I’m certainly glad that you are able to critique others philosophies and what they are worth, I’m not all together sure I’m either educated or close-minded enough to do so.

thauma being old greek for, roughly translated, marvel? and how pray-tell can you ever, honey, having never met me, walked in my shoes know if I have or have not had a moment of pure marvel? once again how lovely that you seem to know everything about everyone. how humble you are about your knowledge and about the knowledge of others. Besides which, I never claimed the movie was entertaining, or that I found philosophy entertaining either.

well, I’m effectively through even trying to reason with you, since you seem to exist only to build your own ego, that’s fine, have fun, good riddance. really.

Can we try to stay on topic please.
