The squid and Me

a couple nights ago i had a dream where i was fighting a giant squid. i have made it quite clear to those around me and myself that a giant squid is the scariest thing alive. anywho…i was struggling with it: it’s tentacles were wrapped around me and i was trying to push away so i couldn’t be eaten. here’s the sticky whicket: as i was pulling away from being consumed a strange feeling surged over me. i didn’t want it to let go of me. i didn’t want to get eaten, yet i was equally afraid of it letting go of me. this perplexed me untill i consulted with a friend and we came up with some interesting theories. we agreed that the squid could represent fear manifest, and i could be love manifest (those being the two primal human reactions) and though i was afraid of it, i also felt immense love for it. that i needed to be in constant struggle with it to be able to feel alive. i think this could be the yinyang manifest. that i saw the primal manifestations in their circular equal conflict…but i’m not sure. this has been puzzling me for a while and was wondering if anyone had any ideas about my contradicting squid dream.
so if you want to take a shot at it i’m open to any and all ideas…

Well I interprete that you missed an embrace, or the sense of being enveloped, secured and protected; but you have mistaken or are deluded about the source for these comforts, and have instead believed or hoped or trusted in something that is false, that leads to death instead of the true comforts you yearned.

Maybe you are subconsciously embracing the fears that you have.

Many people feed off of their fears and feel that they are a healthy part of their lives, like homophobics and racists.

I’m not saying that you are at this extreme, but maybe you should examine yourself to see if there is anything you feel strongly about that may be driven by fear.

this is the coolest thread yet!
i agree, the giant squid is the scariest earthling ever.( the only thing scarier is the “astronautilus” a.k.a space squid)
however its elusiveness and mystery make it an intense dream vision.
i have had similar dreams involving sharks or orcas where i was alone in the middle of the ocean and totally surrounded but rather than afraid i accepted the sitch and relaxed. the funny thing about dream interpretations is that it helps to know what is going in in the dreamers waking life. perhaps there is something that you sub consciously want to be consumed by, generally love is the big one. im not jung but i think such an experience could have serious relevance.

What we’re dealing with here is more an issue of pyschology than of direct philosophy. Wait…let me go and get…Dr. Phil!

Ok, on a more serious note, experts say that the “contents” of a nightmere are usually directly related to the last thoughts of the person before they fell asleep. Were you worried or sacred or even thinking unpleasent thoughts just before you fell asleep?

It could be a “representive/symbolic” type of dream, but it could also be a dream that can be easily explained by science. Naturally, I would not know which.

Hope this helps! :sunglasses:
