First without defining deception, I would only like to say that the word itself has a negative connotation, and I’m starting this thread in the hopes of demystifying that negativity.
My claim is this, deception is the foundation for our survival.
Some of it is simple enough, the example being the worm on the shiny hook that attracts the fish for our food consumption.
Others are a little more tricky. Some promote the first tool, language, as the start pistol equivalent of progress. Langauge is widely assumed to be developed with the idea of clarity. However, hands signals were for a long time considered to be sufficient.
The word water is not water itself. The word water implies many other things, like wet or slippery or cold. This is just a quick example, since many other words used have implications that are far reaching and contain a higher degree of complex insinuations.
Lets us step away from langauge, and address other aspects.
The masks we wear have a wide variety of deceiving qualities. So leave the light on when you are not home, so robbers think someone occupies that living space.
Build up your resume up for applying to college or the workplace, maybe even exggerate the importance of your previous achievements. While at the same time minimizing your weak spots.
Enhance your vocabulary, if only for people to gather from your appearance that you as smarter than any conceptual knowledge you might have. When people enter your house, they will see your bookshelf and assume you have read and retained the information provided in the titles, such as “The 48 Laws of Power.”
A friend is an enemy waiting to happen, since they can insult you the best.
The list of dececeptive examples is endless, and perhaps I have not struck upon the prime occurances of such a practice.
We are a civilization of thinking one thing, doing another, while recylcing phrase and choice words until they lose their effectiveness.
What I have accounted for thus far might seem like a bad thing, however I’ve come to the realization that deception is very much apart of our make-up, pun intended.
War is deception based, just as the seduction of a lover.
My stupid opinon lately is that everything comprised in the universe is what I call God, including humans and rocks and lint. However, many people will express they are not god, that a god is separate from themselves, if they even think it exists at all. and i am forced to wonder . . . are they god decieving me, another aspect of god, or are they decieving themselves, so as to become a better actor.
So I have claimed the deception is the foundation for survival, but dare I say it is inherent in the universal scheme of things.
Comedians set you up with an expection, only to twist your perception with the punchline.
The idea that people read fiction and subject themselves to movie after movie, with a willing suspension of disbelief signals to me they WANT to be led on. Art makes us believe that order exists, when much of real life is chaotic.
Lawyers, politicians, the extent they go to win your peception is no different than cooing a baby into thinking they will be nurtured by softeness and caring, surrounded by safety. Why does the cooing stop? Well, it doesn’t, it just takes on different forms.
We are conning each other, which seems bad, buy seemingly seeming . . . is not always the case.
I am typing this, sitting at circus. I could descibe the acrobats and the smell of the elephants here, but you are not a fool to believe that. I could make you picture such and such, with an accurateness that does the job. Just know this, under the right circumstances, perhaps with right words, perphaps with the testimony of some expert witnesses, who lend you another perspective, you would believe the circus is providing me with internet access. It is possible to hit your brain in just the right way, so that you are convinced, and it is our human ability to find the right combination worthy of that convincing.
