I can’t (seem) to help it. My organism desires utopia above all else while my mind has other intentions, namely, Utopia. Let me explain.
My mind is fixated on a perfect place, and has been fixated on this perfect place for what I recall to be the great majority of my cognitive existence.
I finally knew it was all bullshit about 12 years ago and then once I knew the archaic God was bullshit I fell hook, line and sinker, into the trap of materialism, and then logically from there into fatalistic nihilism. (i.e. “free will doesn’t exist. Fuck You!”)
Now I’ve been struggling with this nihilism for years on end. It’s a depressing feeling (to go back to the op) to see an image/video/orchestra of a perfect life out there but to realize that one cannot actually reach it.
So nihilism when it is functioning badly is a negative view on the basis/nothingness of existence. While nihilism when it is functioning smoothly is a positive view on the basis/nothingness of existence. Or… as they say… “whatever”.
There is a higher creative force, higher beings, etc. But it is not accurate to call them God or gods. Also they are rarely ever seen. This itself doesn’t seem to be the main factor for what is meaningful and what is meaningless. We can create as much meaning as we want, if able. The problem with classical meaning, old meaning, is that it is political, religious, and unphilosophical.
if the problem with classical meaning is that it is political, religious, and unphilosophical, than what ought it be?
As far as calling this or that “God’s” or “Goddesses” or “God” and “God’s” is that inherently inaccurate? If someone refers’s to the sun as “Apollo” while also having elite knowledge of the scientific understandings of the sun and all things related to the cosmos would that understanding be inaccurate?
Utopia, eh? Sounds nice and pleasant. What’s the catch?
Usually if something sounds too good to be true there is always a catch somewhere. My guess is that the people trying to build such a utopia want something. They’ll ask for sacrifices of some kind. Lots and lots of sacrifices.
The kingdom of heaven on earth doesn’t sound like it is very free to all.
Ha! Well, if somebody has a utopian view that is remotely feasible that I haven’t heard about then by all means lets have at it. Lets hear the master plan. I will warn you all however that I have read the book entitled, “Walden 2.”
I don’t think that anyone (at least here) believes in a real life utopia That does not, however, stop us from the ability to imagine a utopia and crave it.
I am weary of those who promise other people utopia.
It’s a ploy to get people to give up their independence and individual sovereignty.
It’s the perfect way for tyrants to mask themselves as saviours to control others, but by having people willing have themselves submit to their cause with promises of heaven on earth.
Tyranny comes under many shapes and forms. Utopianism just one form of many.
Upon reflection I guess my thread was more about what to do with the human desire for utopia. It is a curse in a sense that we can imagine a perfect place but have the knowledge to know that we cannot reach this perfect place. In that sense it is a crisis. That does not mean we should give in to our desire for utopia while in the meantime letting tyrants rule us. I guess I just see this whole thing as a great curiosity above all else.
There is no such thing as “independence and individual sovereignty”.
That is one of those “propaganda” things used to get people to attempt stupid things that enslaves them.
