those my space page thingamajiggies...

I’ll have to get back to you later or tomorrow about this because I’ll need to find a handful of links to give you a proper version of the story…

Good (useful) to know.

…killed?

i knew i should have deleted mine instead of abandoning it…

The people in question arranged to meet someone that they communicated with on the site. I assume that’s the way it went.

However, I saw on a TV show that kids on college campuses have been having trouble as well, due to the small community sizes and pictures posted.

I look forward to it, please PM me if you put it in a independent topic. Thanks!

My problem with myspace is that its coding sucks. The people behind it can’t even make their ColdFusion generate proper HTML 4.01 tags, let alone attempt XHTML 1.0 Transitional.
In playing around with my profile, i found, no joking, over 20 coding errors (such as redundant < td > tags, missing </ td > tags, and nesting problems), plus all of the tags that are supposed to be self-closing (meta, link, br, and img), are not (although that’s an XHTML thing). Furthermore, their CSS files are overly redundant, there is no consistency to tag elements (i.e. all tag elements are supposed to be [1] lowercase and [2] include a value, so CHECKED should be replaced with checked=“checked”), and the page load times are atrocious.
These are very simply coding practices that any web design team should know as easily as basic CSS.

you know way the hell too much about computers. no joke.

I agree about the coding issue; and load-times, specifically on dial-up, are absurd. Bad enough most pages are loaded with pictures, some also have songs attached to them, making even smaller spaces take several minutes to load up completely.

i have a 4mb cable connection and have slow load times.

Not really. i know a very small subset of the computer world…most of it is restricted to a pc/win box that every so often masquerades into the linux world. And what i do know is because zero order logic comes quite easily to me and so conceptualising these things only needs a basic understanding of the vocabulary.

I’m sure the average and unaverage myspace users is no using it to evaluate its programming qualities…in saying that…ui am sure many laymen and women have actually learned a little bit about programming that they might never have expected too.

Funny to see this here just now. A co-worker was giving me the low-down on MySpace yesterday. I checked it out. But what I really want is a my space where I can just put my own private writing and images for my own amusement. I don’t want anyone looking at it, and I don’t want any comments. So I made a few forums at geocities.com/ is not bad. In two years mine hasn’t been deleted, but it’s too small.

The girl got her self killed. She knows not to write her name in graffiti all along the walls, doesn’t she? Same idea. User competency is key.

or perhaps the bigger the my space the bigger the loser???
[/quote]

Trust me, the bigger the myspace, the bigger the loser! My philosophy on my space, the more friends you have on my space, the less friends you have in real life. It is amazing to me how people waste their time fancying up those stupid pages. The majority of those pages contain nothing but random babble about peoples party lives. Lots and lots of mundane babble. And when it comes time for many of these people to describe what their favorite books are many of them post “Do i look like the type of person that reads?” It is just amazing to me that many of these people think that its cool or cute to be stupid! Thats all i have to say on myspace.

i’ve enjoyed myspace…as a dj and a writer, i’ve been able to keep up with other music scenes and friends/dj’s in other cities, promote gigs, get feedback on my writings, etc…i’m on there pretty much all day every day.

Wow, that’s some weird girl then. Perhaps I should say, was some weird girl then.

Also, two boys were just arrested for putting an illegal video on the site.

That site seems to have gained quite a focus as of late.

(a little article i wrote about myspace)

Myspace Cadets

Myspace was founded in 2003 as a web portal for musicians. Artists were provided a means of sharing music as well as information on future concert locations. The website’s user base has since grown beyond musicians and as of late-2005 there are over 42 million Myspace users. Myspace has changed the music industry in a pretty revolutionary way in terms of accessibility, it cuts through the difficult business of networking and communication, the class structure has been disbanded in a very real sense, but only at an electronic level.

The set up is basic. You sign up for free, and can then set to work on decorating, personalising and socialising with your profile, and start tiring to add as many people, bands, celebrities, stars, philosophers, virtually anyone who was or is someone. Myspace has given life blood and legitimacy to thousands of independent music groups, promoters and companies, as well as, magazines, fanzines, newspaper and web groups, as well as, the everyday user fan or aficionado. Myspace is not only for the vain-glorious youth of today, it is not only for people who wish to try and add several million myspace friends, nor is it primarily a beauty contest. It is for anyone with a mission, it gives you a platform for potentially thousands of people to ‘hear your cause’ ‘check out your music’ ‘praise your style’ ‘insult your taste’ ‘interact’.

Now millions upon millions of people sit soullessly, but yet full of spirit, surfing around myspace day in day out, whether you despise the faddish nature of myspace or love its instant connections and global village feel, let it be known, myspace is set to become and possibly remain a huge popular culture phenomenon. O Myspace – is it really the Beelzebub of the internet, a vehicle for the culture of mass produced individualism that celebrates nothing but the triumph of mediocre, or is it a charming destroyer of social barriers, a bastion of electronic egalitarian values? Either way it is now an integral part of the phenomenology of the universe, so if you want to promote your band, promote your magazine, your pub, or increase personal exposure, fill the space, fill the void, with myspace.

Colin,

As you may have noticed, I’ve recently deleted my myspace account on the grounds of the whole thing having become a bastion of petty individuality and lack of imagination. The musical aspect is the only good thing about the place…

I did notice you deleted your account…of course you are above all that…but even in terms of petty individualism…it has its place…people are individual to an extent…even if they lack imagination…i think one mass produced individual would be very interesting compared to any ant, though perhaps not as efficient.

i have met a lot of decent and interesting people on myspace…i guess it depends what your looking for…or whether you are above all that intellectually, culturally…

what do you think so petty about the cult of individualism?

Either SIATD hasn’t seen my reply…or he is even ‘above’ replying to a petty myspace user… =D>

Colin,

I responded to your PM, there’s no need to get into all that here and now…
