time to resume life

Every year I go through this waiting.
I wait for my year to begin.
And today it does
what event am I talking about?

BASEBALL.

I will eat, sleep, drink, watch, study, baseball for the
next 6 months. I actually keep track of the seasons by
baseball. For the first time in years, I don’t really know
how many games I will get to, because of my surgery.
Usually I go to anywhere from 10 games a year to
40 games a years depending on what is going on.

Kropotkin

In Britain we don’t actually have a proper close season for football. This season there’s the FA cup final, the European Cup final (Arsenal have a reasonable chance of making it), then the World Cup in Krautland and pre season tours (including the US, ‘soccer’ fans…) start literally the week after the World Cup finishes. There’s also the much maligned Intertoto summer tournament in which I’ll expect to see at least one English team.

So for the next 12 months I’ll be watching football as I eat my frozen cheese and reread Barthes’ Mythologies…

“Ray, people will come Ray…They’ll pass over the money without even thinking about it: for it is money they have and peace they lack. And they’ll walk out to the bleachers; sit in shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon. They’ll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they’ll watch the game and it’ll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick they’ll have to brush them away from their faces. People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it’s a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good and could be again. Oh… people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.”
