The year 1776 seems to be such a monumental turning point in world history; a true annus mirabilis for sure of course that has influenced the world for the last 230 years.

–Adam Smith publishes The Wealth of Nations (Introducing the concept of capitalism to the world, which would shape the economies of some world powers and much of the world for the next 230 years and on).
–Edward Gibbon publishes The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (Detailing how Christianity was a major contributor to the decline and fall of this once great empire).
–Thomas Paine publishes Common Sense (Contributing towards the progression of the American Revolution).
–The United States Declaration of Independence is signed (Ushering in a nation that would one day become the most powerful in the world).
–Adam Weishaupt founds the Bavarian Illuminati [Order of the Illuminati] in Ingolstadt, Bavaria (Ushering in the propagation of enough conspiracy theories to make Gobbo’s head boil with juicy paranoia and his mouth drool with the “truth” - I’m not saying that he does, just that he could).
–World’s first submarine attack. American submersible craft Turtle attempts to attach a time bomb to the hull of British Admiral Richard Howe’s flagship HMS Eagle in New York Harbor (Marking a new begining in naval warfare).
–The Phi Beta Kappa society is founded at the College of William and Mary (The oldest surviving academic honor society in existence).

–John Constable was born this year (Who would go on to paint fascinating dipictions of the English countryside).
–David Hume died this year (A Scottish philosopher who influenced the direction of many facets of intellectual thought - even politics!).

It was also the year the British sailor Captain James Cook navigated the east coast of Australia. This paved the way for British settlement of the country.
