I was thinking about opening an account to trade currencies with about a grand or so just to see what happens.
Does anyone else do this? Any experienced traders here with any tips?

I’ll keep that in mind. How can you tell if they’re wooden when you’re just trading online?

What do you mean?
I mean that you have realised that you may or may not be dealing with a reputable firm online. You can’t see their suits, shake their hands, or see their haircuts. How else would you know they are honest?
I don’t trust bankers that I meet in person either. But I’ve still gotta bank. I was just asking if anyone with experience might have any tips for beginners. I saw an ad for one site on TV. That seems pretty reputable I guess…

You could get lucky but that is not the norm. You also have to ask yourself if you have an edge. For the individual investor the edge can be technical analysis (but you are dealing in probabilities, so you need to predefine exit points or stop-loss).
It is best to have a fundamental conviction (ie understand what is really going on) and use technical analysis for market timing.
This site should give you some ideas.
Pick a reliable broker that is US based and registered with NFA. Plan your trade and trade your plan. Do not succumb to emotional trading (greed). It’s a bad habit that will hurt you in the long run. Before trading real money, you really should try the game/trials they offer.
You might also try insider trading. Get some insider type to fall in love with you or something. Preferably someone who works in some foreign central bank. You might want this to be a female.

I wouldn’t bother playing currencies. All currencies are based on fiat money. gold has been rising against all currencies; it is the financial asset par excellence. Gold corrected from is recent highs of 850, and these are probably good levels to step in with a medium to long term view. Silver should accelerate even more rapidly - it has some catching up to do.
