do any of you belive that in the american english speaking community there are words that trigger strong negative emotions and thus are more readily recognized than non-trgger words.
lets take the four amrican trigger words.
Fuck
KILL
SEX
DIE
Now ask you’re self, what were the first four words you saw when opening this page?
DID you continue reading when you saw this words,
obivousely this words would not work in country where death is not viewed as moribidly as it is in america. Or more so in a country where sex is more repressed
As always I’m not to sure how to word all this. In a way all our words are trigger words, when I say “Iraq” you might say “money” or “Bush.” Now those words are also negative only if you think in a negative way. “Sex,” one might say “pleasure.” Now for the other ones, yes they trigger negative thought for me, but to a sick person it could also be a form of entertainment.
Words generally trigger specific meanings only when they are placed within a context.
So to answer your question, first, no I did not stop reading. Second, fuck by itself only triggers an association of crudeness and a need to express poignanacy; sex does not trigger anything until I place the word within context, and kill and die, also mean absolutly nothing until I place them within context. That means, I guess, that when I read a word over I don’t bother to associate or attach any meaning to it until I understand the context it is being used in.
So, I’m sorry, but I don’t agree with your thesis.
Some words are ‘stronger’ than others because they trigger a more emotive associative response - “Fuck” conjures both more violent and more diverse associations than “sex” and “sex” in turn calls up a slightly different and more raunchy picture than “intercourse” - the rest however are less emotive - kill/die - a better basis for those would have been “murder” or “torture” or “mutilate” perhaps.
All words are just jumping off points though - their base - dictionary - consensual meaning almost secondary to the place they occupy in the internal lexus of the individual. Shoes to me, just mean something you put on your feet, with a wiff of sex if I concentrate on associations with old mother Hubbard - but to a fetishist, the word “shoe” will leap off the page and hit him or her straight in the crotch.
Of course all words are triggers - they wouldn’t work as a means of communication otherwise - and yes - cultural factors are a modifier - but I kind of fail to see your point, beyond a simple observation of the language.
i’ve done studies where a piece of paper has been covered with normal text in those words included. i would have a person look at it for 1-4 seconds
and ask them some words they remember and sure enoguh the trigger worlds are included. All im saying is that thouse words tend to be more noticed then words like cat or tree or table.

The first word I saw was ‘DIe’ because you spelt it with two capitals.
I agree to a certain extent but I think its rather a mute point that you didn’t need to bother to write down. I mean, if I wrote ‘FUCK YOU!!!’ or course it would get your attention. However, I also believe that if I wrote ‘SQUIRREL!!!’ it would get your attention because of the use of capital lettres.
would it though? I think the human mind on a subconcious levels is very intrigued by things that are considered wrong or taboo. you dont think that has any effect?
I posted in the other thread regarding triggers… however, each has their own interest. Me being a PC geek would rather get my mind turned towards tech stuff rather than profanity. Case proven easily.
As for remembering words, if I write a non existent word that is easy to reproduce/remember, trust me, you will memorize it instantly due to it having no place there, as your mind would more likely answer to the “any abnormal words there ?” question format.
I haven’t slept in 2 days and none of you wanted to debate my other 2 theories so I am tired and wil lgo into detail tomorrow.
Your playing on the assumption that we find these words wrong or taboo, but you can’t know that. And in case your wondering, I for instance, do not find these words wrong or taboo. So be careful with the inductive inferences (generalizing from the particular case to the universal).
I would also venture to guess that the words will trigger different responses for people of different ages. For example, a younger person, who may have been taught that these words are wrong – say a 13 or 14 year old – will respond much differently from a 21 year old who has been exposed to such language which may be pervasive in everyday use with his peers, in literature, etc. For instance, a high school student may giggle if a teacher begins talking about Freud’s theory of “penis envy” whereas a college student may find nothing funny or amusing in this because they are more or less – I hesistate to say this but will nevertheless – “more mature.”
well. I geuss i have been throughly disproven. As a 15 year old recluse i have been sitting on this stuff for a while and just needed to get my crack pot ideas out. oh well…back to my theories on the flaws of communism.
ps. i was still better than they guy who thought spiders where machines that spied on us…read his thread lol
