In the movie “Troy”, in the festivities following the peace treaty between Sparta and Troy, Menelaus and Hector strike their cups and willingly spill some wine to the ground, saying as they do:“To the gods!”
The action is useless, for they give a taste of wine to what they don’t see. Certainly the ground is not meant to “drink” the wine. The act is void of practicality. They offer wine to what has no needs. But that is the beauty of it, because the useless gesture renders the rest of human life more useful, purposeful, meaningful…We sacrifice a little of our practical reason that we may lay claim to Wisdom…
Beautiful. Is it really unreasonable though if we’re not deluded regarding literalness, or direct cause and effect - if we understand what it means and how it affects and effects reality?
