This is something that concerns me greatly, since I have to use taxis a lot. A BBC presenter was sacked from her job for asking for a non-Asian driver for her 14 year old daughter. What’s interesting about this is how BBC employees are so blatantly pro-Muslim where the rest of us us are concerned, but when it comes to the safety of thir own families they act rather differently.
Seriously, Maia? You’re quoting an agitprop piece from a bigoted US think-tank?
"Great Britain is in the throes of a rape and pedophilia epidemic unlike anything the country has experienced in living memory.
Many of the sex crimes are being perpetrated by Muslim child grooming gangs responsible for drugging, raping and torturing hundreds and possibly thousands of British girls."
They don’t feel the need to support that with facts, I notice. Or “so-called facts”, as this sort of site usually sputters between bleating about “liberal bias” and “feminazis”.
Someone tell Maia to take me off her ignore list for a while.
As an immigrant of sorts, living in a Muslim country, having left the UK way back when… Perhaps I can offer a different perspective.
First of all, who emigrates in the first place…? Is it the well-educated, tolerant, socially skilled faction of a population…? No, because they all stay at home and work in their nice, well-paying, or at least sufficiently-paid, jobs - unless they are being beaten up by the current regime. The largest faction of emigrés are those who cannot find a way of making a decent living in the country they were born. That’s the reason I buggered off after not finding any jobs I fancied doing long term after I graduated.
The largest faction of immigrants are nearly always going to be ruralized, fairly ignorant and steeped in cultural/religious-derived stereotypic expectation.
When I first arrived here, I lived with another newbie-teacher, a girl from Scotland. Blonde, leggy, and quite good-looking in a Slavic-cheek-bony kinda way. Here is hot, compared to the UK, so when summer came, she’d get out the very short shorts, and the scoop-necked vests.
Unfortunately, the “blonde, slavic, not-wearing very much” look over here corresponds almost exactly with the ‘I am a Russian prostitute’ meme. And as such, my colleague was often commented on as she passed down the street, and followed home sometimes, where usually I was there to explain in very bad Turkish, and very good body-language that she was not, in fact, a cheap hooker.
To many straight off the boat muslim immigrants, the UK seems initially to be populated by soft flabby guys with no sense of honour, and cheap drunken hookers. In the same way that I believed, before I got here, that I was in for a year of palm trees, towelheads, and swishy women in Harem-pants. It takes time, and more importantly, cultural exposure, to erode these stereotypic models, and the behavioural components inherrent to holding them.
This is the thing about immigrants. A few are good, they lead to diversification, innovation, cultural change. Too many however, and the opportunities for ghettoism this allows, means that an immigrant is prevented from recieving the degree of cultural exposure that would temper preconceptions and promote assimilation, tolerance and respect. I was alone in Tr, pretty much, this meant I mingled, learnt the language, made friends, learnt not to step on too many cultural toes, and began to experience people as individuals with individual characters, rather than a faceless mass of possible camel-riding polygamic mosque-dwellers. I was assimilated.
If however, there had been a large English enclave when I arrived, I would have remained in a little coccoon of Englishness, and my stereotypes would have continued - and my dealings with the inhabitants coloured by these (wrong) beliefs. I know ex-pats like that over here - they don’t speak the language, and are outrageously prejudiced. Twats, in short, because they’ve never been required to change, always insulated from Turk people and culture by effective social ghettoism.
Imagine if I moved from the UK to some weird place where the men were all absolute cowards - literally not lifting a finger to protect their dignity, or the persons of those around them - where punishment for social infraction meant a relatively short spell in a 5-star hotel, and the women walked around naked with the words ‘fuck me hard I don’t mind’ tattooed on their backsides, and frequently became so drunk they fell over on their backs with their legs spread.
Rape is wrong. I’m not arguing that these taxi-drivers are simply misunderstood and should be given an easy ride legalistically - I’m just trying to point out that state policies on immigration in the UK are unrealistic, overly hands-off on the ‘this is the UK, if you live here you are expected to do X,Y and Z, and not do A, B, and C.’ The UK is too tolerant, too PC, too tip-toe around cultural dissonance.
If you import hand-grenades, and don’t difuse them at the border, then don’t act surprised when they blow up in your face.
I don’t see 2,500 anywhere in that report. I see a reference to 1,125 taxi rapes in London per year, but the only report I find on a quick Google (for variants on “metropolitan police taxi rapes”) links back to the page you were quoting. How acclaimed must this report be?
I don’t see any evidence presented for a rape/paedophilia epidemic, nor any evidence that “Muslim child grooming gangs” are drugging, raping and torturing possibly thousands of British girls.
I don’t see any links presented between taxi rape and the Muslim grooming gangs, or any particular reason to single out Muslims as taxi rapists.
I don’t see any evidence that Muslims are disproportionately represented among taxi driver rapists. I see a lot of hand-picked individual cases, but only a tiny fraction of the many hundreds that occur each year.
It’s an anti-intellectual exercise in Muslim-bashing. Pure emotive bullshit. There may be evidence to back up all their claims, but if they don’t present it and keep everything piled into a general “Muslims are nasty” heap, it remains anti-intellectual bullshit. And if one buys into that because one has a bad feeling about Muslims and this just confirms it, without actually looking into any relevant figures, then one is a bigot. If you’re worried, look into it by all means, I’m not saying there’s no link at all - you’re a vulnerable woman, and it’s good that safety is a concern. If you find you’re significantly at more risk from a Muslim taxi driver, then ask for a non-Muslim (not “non-Asian”) taxi driver. Just don’t look for puff pieces that confirm your fears and prejudices ineptly, and use that to justify your prejudices on a talk board aimed in some way towards critical thinking.
Actually, while Googling: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Worboys
the worst sex-offending cabbie to date was a white British Londoner. See? Proof of…
… absolutely nothing.
‘Dregs’ is overly emotive. You get people. People with sometimes seriously conflicting beliefs about how to behave, and what different social habits and dress indicate. Numbers enable insularity, and that’s the problem.
