Understanding of religious experience

Is it possible to fully understand religious experience without ever having had a religious experience? Example: I can fully understand one’s expression of their trip to the beach only because I have also been to the beach (or can I?), otherwise would my lack of experience put a ceiling on the full intelligibility of what they are trying to convey?

Good point. The people least likely to have ever had a “religious experience” are those most likely to equate the experience with psychosis. Even Jesus’ family thought he was “beside himself.”
