Question posed: In what does true love consist?
Dialogue between Isaac Newton & William Shakespeare
IN:What a grand day it is, William! Nature is in bloom, and the sounds of local wildlife fill my ear. There are times when I wonder if this is the best God has to offer us, do you know what I mean?
WS: I believe I do; do you speak of someone to call our own? Someone to brighten our darkest hour and even give us their heart of hearts, and ours unto them?
IN: Yes, a woman is whom I speak of. I believe this may be the
emptiness I have felt all of my life. As a man of science and numbers, there aren’t any instances in my work where we must take human feelings into consideration. We perform various experiments and calculations, although never seeking insight into the human heart. Unlike myself, you are a writer of great sonnets and works which deal with society on a more human level. From your experience, William, in what does true love consist? Is it a chemical reaction, is it a state of perception, or is it more?
WS: Isaac my friend, you see, unlike your work where one performs experiments and calculations, always following some sort of procedure; my work is different. I find in other humans what you find in the sciences. In other words, there is no way for me to show you what love consists of. What I can do for you, however, is show you examples of humanity and from there you can share what your beliefs and thoughts are. There is much more to it than this, but we all must start somewhere.
IN: I understand so far that there is a certain criteria one must follow, but being a man of the sciences, I am forced to believe there is more to it than what you are saying, something scientific
WS: I haven’t said much on the topic so far, you presuppose what you think I am thinking because of my works. However, do you know why my writings are full of such romance? (IN: No, I do not) Well, the best way to begin to put it into words would be to say that God has a plan for each and every one of us. This is a plan which is limited by nothing, and is open to anything and everything. So, regarding the “emptiness†you said you felt, this could very well be a desire to be with a special woman. With that being said, this would denote that there is someone special in the world for you. Do you follow so far?
IN: I believe I do, but what does this have to do with true love?
WS: God’s plan has everything to do with true love because the love from God is the most extreme form of love which someone can experience. Just like a loving and caring parent wanting the best for their children, God has placed someone on this Earth for each and every one of us, however is not to say that the relationship we have with God is a similar love in which we share with another. With that being said, we can take all forms of love such as love for our parents, siblings, friends, self and label them non-physical. We can say with certainty that we can not see love, it is simply known and showed through acts which reinforce this. Expanding on that concept, God has given us these gifts of love, more importantly, free will. Our heavenly father also proclaimed for us to set forth, “be fruitful, and multiplyâ€. In order for 2 people to share in sexual-intercourse with the intent to bare a child, there must be an intensely deep connection between the two. Therefore, if God commands us to set forth and create life, he must know the “chemistry†which is involved. In other words, if there is no love between humans there can be no continuation of the human race. Isaac, have you ever felt anything which could resemble true love?
IN: I don’t believe so, however from what you have said, William, this seems like something which is either there or not. We are in it whole-heartedly or not at all. I see you mention human chemistry, which I find interesting because it does go back to my original problem with the conversation; that the sciences are involved.
WS: Saying that sciences are involved would suggest a certain methodical pattern to how and when people fall in love. 2 plus 2 always equals 4, and the world will always be round. In the “science of the heartâ€, no two cases are similar. Each experience will be different, although the way we identify these events are by labeling them “loveâ€. You see, love has nothing to do with sex, or money, or even any type of physical or monetary benefit one might gain; it has to do with filling the “empty space†which your soul feels. Referring to my previous example, just like an inherent love for family is felt, the same goes for that unique person which “completes usâ€. Just like we know we love our, say, mother for example, the same could be said for our significant other. When we establish a relationship with this person, it is either felt with our whole body, mind, and soul; or it isn’t. To sum things up, God gave us this command to go forth and create children, thus leading to finding our life partner, therefore leading to all of the emotions which go along with such a task.
IN: I see what you’re saying, but I’m not quite sure I understand everything.
WS: See, Isaac, when the feelings of love are felt you will then understanding the words in which I speak.
IN: It seems rather simple; God loves us; we love God and family; we meet 1 special person; we make a family of our own, and thus the cycle continues. I understand the mechanics but how true love exists does escape me.
WS: Just like we have no question of love for God and family, if we know this person is our equal than this must not be questioned. True love exists in each and every one of us, however just like a mathematical equation, the numbers don’t always add up. For example, say true love must add up to the number 18, you are number 4. You go through your whole life meeting everybody but a number 14, thus not reaching the proper result.
This is to say, that each and every one of us possesses the ability to love, due to God’s grace. True love does not begin or end in pleasures of the flesh for any other vein reason. There is someone out in the world for everyone, however it is also God’s will when we meet the person who fills this “voidâ€.
IN: From what I understand, this is something which I can not actively seek. Although you have brought much clairity I am still compelled to explore this scientifically. To suggest that such things could happen by mere chance seems insane to me. These are my thoughts
WS: Go ahead, and explore what you must. The only way to understand is to find out for ourselves, not through mere human beings. True love will come at a time which is least expected, and hopefully will change your ways of thinking. It is simply just another one of God’s many gifts.
IN: Thank you again, William. I will meditate on this.
WE: Be well, Isaac
