Hmmm… I was sort of ambivalent about the SB, but now that I know, I’ll be rooting for the Steelers. As I think about it, I always have liked the Steelers. I go waaaay back to Bradshaw and the “steel curtain”. Besides, anyone who wears a chunk of cheese on their head… well, there is something to be said about that. It makes waving a towel seem almost sane.
Well, this is mundane babble so what the hell: if anything reflects just how mindless this consume! consume! consume! pop culture monstrosity called “America” has become, professional football and the Super Bowl surely epitomise it.
Only here would as much attention be placed on the freaking commercials as on the barely controlled mayhem of testosterone junkies beating each other to a pulp down on the field. It’s not quite the “bread and circuses” mentality of the Spartacus crowd, of course, but it’s surely heading that direction.
All of the Quarterbacks played horribly in every game, with the exception of Mark Sanchez.
Sanchez went 20/33 for 233 yards, 2 TD’s and no picks for a 102.2 passer rating.
The second best Quarterback (Passer Rating) was Caleb Hanie from the Chicago Bears, he was undrafted out of Colorado State, has been in the league for three years, and has appeared in, I think, five games in the last two years. (No appearances his Rookie year). Anyway, he threw for 1 TD and two picks, had a sixty-something passer rating, but it should be considered that the last pick was thrown in desperation on a Fourth-Down play because some dumbass called an end-around on third down on what would have been the Bears final drive of Regulation.
It’s actually a shame, despite the fact that the Bears lost everyone would be talking about that young Hanie kid if they weren’t so busy whining about Cutler being a little girl. Maybe he was a little girl, maybe he wasn’t, I’m not in his body to experience that sprained MCL to know. I mean, a sprained MCL hurts like Hell, and it’s such that some people can suck it up and play on it and some people can’t.
Roethlisberger was horrible, but he made two clutch throws for first downs, especially that last completion where the Jets’ Blitz had him absolutely dead-to-rights. Either way, homeboy’s line was 10/19 (I think) for 130-something yards, 0 TD’s and 2 Picks. I will admit that one of the picks wasn’t really his fault because the catch should have either been made by Mendenhall, or the ball having been thrown too hard, Mendenhall then needs to play a little offensive-defense and knock it down.
Cutler played like shit before getting pulled/pulling himself. I think he was 6/14 with 80 and a pick. The Offensive Line wasn’t doing him any favors, though. It didn’t do Caleb Hanie any favors, either, but Hanie impressed me with his feet escaping a few plays that looked like sure sacks.
Todd Collins went 0/4 and almost threw two picks…yet he finished the game with a better QB rating than Cutler!
Rodgers was 17/30 for…(Can’t remember, but too lazy to look it up), between 240-250 and had two picks for a 55-something passer rating. The stats have him playing a worse game than he actually did, though. He averaged over eight yards per pass attempt and did a good job marching the Packers downfield for a few scoring drives. He ran one in for a TD as well.
To me, Caleb Hanie was the story of the day. You’ve got this player who’s basically a Rookie (in terms of actual game experience) that goes out and makes the game 14-7 with a 32-yard pass that sets Chester Taylor up for a 1-Yard rushing touchdown, but then Chicago has a three-and-out (two incompletions by Hanie) followed by Hanie throwing a Pick-Six to a fucking tackle two drives after their scoring drive to make the game 21-7.
I’m sitting there thinking, the kid’s done. He doesn’t have the experience to maintain his composure, but then the Bears start their next drive with about 6:00 left on the clock in the fourth-quarter and Hanie completes FOUR consecutive passes for a total of sixty yards capped off by a thirty-five yard TD bomb to Bennett.
Chicago eventually gets the ball back down 21-14 with less than three minutes on the clock. Hanie comes out and stays focused, doesn’t rush anything, and methodically carves out a pair of first downs, despite a ten yard penalty on first-and-ten on the second of the two series. It’s just a shame Chicago decided to call that end-around to Bennett on third-and-three, you know that the Packers are going to be trying to pressure a young QB by blitzing (as they had been) so there’s going to be some Green on the wrong side of the line of scrimmage, I just don’t know how you do anything but throw in that situation…
I was actually pulling for the Packers because the Patriots are out, the Vikings were never in and I like Rodgers, but it would have been cool to see the game go OT. It would also have been cool to see the Bears win in a way, because regardless of the result of the Super Bowl, Caleb Hanie would be talked about the entire off-season. Poor kid, doubt if he’ll ever see another chance like that.
By the way, what the Hell was Shields thinking about taking off like that after catching that last pick!? Hit the ground, the game’s over!!!
Agreed. The QB’s all looked pretty crappy. Sanchez only looked like he was in the game the second half, so no kudos for him either. Looking ahead, if Rogers plays as well as he did the first half of the Chicago game, the Steelers are in for a long day. Both the pack and the steelers are possession teams and I’m guessing the winner will be decided by time of possession and the fewest mistakes. I’d favor the steelers on that. 8 and 9 minute drives keeps Rogers off the field and wears the defense out. This one is going to be a pretty evenly matched SB dust up. I’m just pleased to know I’m rooting against the girls.
Kudos enough for being the only QB with a Rating above seventy, besides 102.2 in those conditions is fantastic!
By the way, I’m not entirely sure the Jets had the ball in the first half. j/k
I agree that turnovers are going to be a big part of this game, but keep in mind this game’s going to be in a dome here, so throws will be more accurate and the ball is not going to be slippery. I agree that Time of Possession is going to be important, but don’t forget that barring a miracle, the Packers have virtually no chance of running with any success against the Steelers. I think that Rodgers should play a game similar to Tom Brady’s and focus on accuracy and short completions, if you have four guys running five-yard slants, one of them will probably have a step on the defender for some yards after the catch.
I’d buy into your Time of Possession theory, except I also tend to think this is the type of match-up that can come down to one or two huge plays. A nice return on special teams, maybe a blocked punt, a bomb downfield, Pick-Six, and I would suggest that the Packers are the more likely team to pull out such a play. Besides, I’ve seen Roethlisberger make some really stupid throws in his career, some of them in domes, Rodgers…not as much.
Yeah, the possibles are what is going to make the game interesting. I agree that the “miracle” plays plus making fewer mistakes than the other guy could well decide the game. The pack can be explosive, but I was really impressed with the steeler ability to chew up the clock in those long drives. I think the jets would have won if they could have had their offense on the field - or had 5 quarters instead of 4. Finally, I look at the overall team maturity. Greenbay? Maybe next year, but the steelers look more like a team on both sides of the ball. Dunno. I wouldn’t give points either way on this one. I can easily see a 3 point winning margin on a field goal in the last 10 seconds of the game.
