I was just wondering, am I correct in saying that, “View New Posts,” is a non-user specific search function that simply looks up the time that you (user) was last logged on and automatically performs a search for all posts made having a time stamp later than that time?
Or, do all of the posts that a specific user has not read simply get stored in some kind of database to where the server keeps a running track of what threads a specific use rhas not read since last logging out.
I think it’s the first one, a search function.
Although, I think, “View Unanswered Posts,” is a server-stored thing and not a search function because it would not make sense for the server to have to perform an original search everytime someone wanted to see the unanswered posts. It would seem to me that it makes more sense for every thread to go into the database of unanswered posts and simply drop out of that database when the posts gets answered as opposed to the server having to perform a fresh search for unanswered posts every time.
Does anyone know what category these two things fall under for sure?
Do you actually have this much clarity at this time of Morning You did me a public service because I have never taken notice of the “View New or - Unanswered Posts” before [that I can recall] and I’m wondering “what is he talking about?”. Then I went in search of them and ureka found them.
Technologically speaking, I’ll leave the answer for others. But I think both of them can be a good “user” search function …depending on how thorough one is in using the forum. I personally just go to “view your posts” but now I can make use of the other two now that I am aware of them. Ah, awareness is bliss. And they make more sense then thrashing through the Board Index. But all four together makes for better harmony toward our needs.
One more question…do you think we can make this thread into a philosophical or psychological discussion, pavlov?
Thank you for contributing to a more harmonious life style for me.
LOL, I’m at work this time of the morning. If you would like to see me without clarity, 10:00a.m.-12:00 Noon would be the time for that.
I’m glad that I could be of service, though. I have always used that button, every message board I have ever been on.
I don’t like, “View Your Posts,” because it does not include any new threads that you have not posted on. “View New Posts,” is definitely the best because it is everything that has happened since you logged off. I did something at a different forum once and created a username just for the purpose. What I did was I was logged in on two different windows under different usernames and I had a post typed and ready to post on the second one, so I logged out the first one, hit post on the second one and logged the first one back in, and sure enough it was there on View New Posts!
I appreciate your gratitude.
As far as any techie reference goes, I know nothing about it. I am not responsible for my avatar, not am I responsible for my picture for a signature, I wouldn’t know how to do it!
I am just good at finding the most efficient way to do something, and message boards should be no different.
