Was America founded as a Christian Nation?

Please give historical support, not opinion or speculation. EX. treaty with Tripoli drafted in 1796.

The Constitution prior to the Bill of Rights does not really mention religion.

If the Constitution doesn’t specify one way or the other, who can know?

With the advent of the Bill of Rights, the separation of church (religion) and state is documented in the First Amendment.

That means that from then on the U.S. is not a Christian nation, whether or not it was founded as one.

So, considering how quickly the Bill of Rights was added, I’d say that there was no overt intent to make the U.S. a Christian nation, and for those who might have covertly hoped to say that the U.S. was founded as a Christian nation, they were quickly thwarted by the bill’s First Amendment to the Constitution.

The only evidence that someone could cite as the US being a Christian nation would either involve claiming the pilgrims as the intellectual forefathers of the American nation . . .

Or a simple normative claim that when America was founded, the majority of its population was Christian and so it was simply assumed that America would be a Christian nation, though one without an official state-sponsored sect.

I don’t think either argument holds too much water.

When I read your question I was immediately reminded of the FORUM RULES/GUIDELINES/LAWS. In particular the following guideline came to mind:

"ii) Asking questions.

Clearly questions are a large part of philosophy and we welcome thought-provoking questions and genuine calls for opinions and perspective on philosophical issues. However, being part of a community means a bit of give and take. Share your ideas on the topics you bring up and don’t just blindly post questions because you feel you should or you think it’ll make you look clever. A consistent career of one-liner questions will not be looked upon kindly. "

Could you give us some idea what your position is on the question you have posed?

I thought he clearly did by mentioning the treaty of Tripoli which states in the preamble that America was not founded as, nor ever was a Christian nation.

Yeah, we are not a Christian “Government” based on the First Amendment:

The “nation” is Christian as a percentage of the population whatever that is. We are also an Atheist “nation” in this regard.
