Ali G has been around in this country (where he’s from, obviously) for 7 years or so. Personally I find Borat to be a much funnier character because he gets more amusing responses out of people whereas Ali G is a more domineering character and hence tends to force the interviewees into the background.
It’s all a variation on the theme of the mockumentary (insert reference to Spinal Tap of your own preference) which has been explored in a lot of different ways here in the UK, I dunno so much about North American comedy. The Office is another show in the same tradition, the border between naturalist comedy and realist documentary. Clever stuff, if you’re into film/tv criticism…
well i assumed people knew but perhaps had never seen it or thought it was funny.
i think whats so funny about it is that he interviews these people who really are taking it seriously the entire time, they think hes a complete idiot but really they are the ones being fooled.
Borat gets me every time. Sacha Baron Cohen is a genius in his highlighting of anti-semitism in modern society through comedy. I remember the time he got a whole crowd of typical americans in a typical bar to join him in a song about hating Jews. And the time he suggested to a hunter that it should be made legal to hunt Jews, the hunter agreed.
I like the Austrian guy too, I was pissing myself when I watched the one where he kept asking this fashion designer contradicting questions about his designs.
Such as, from the top of my head:
“So, it looks like your designs were going for a very free and open look any reason for this?” After a few more questions
“Your designs were very restrictive and closed, is this a new trend?”
I just made them up, but you get the idea.
Borat: Yakshemash! In US of A, democracy is very different from Kazakhstan. In America, woman can vote, but horse - cannot!
[wondering gesture]
Of course, it isn’t all sunshine and lollipops for Cohen, who had to take down his Borat website after he was threatened with legal action by the people and government of Kazakhstan.
I sometimes use Ali in my class to show awkward social situations–usually involving Borat, whom I actually have difficulty watching now b/c I feel somewhat bad for some of the “innocent” people he suckers in…though sometimes they handle it pretty well, like during the wine-tasting epidsode in Mississippi, where he shows two older, refined Mississippipes* (?) pix of his sister, with one of them being of her grapping Borat’s penis, and the other of her riding the same penis.
My favourite of the Austrian is where he says to a skinhead “So, are there any skinheads who aren’t gay?”
Shame on any of you who think that’s an oxy moron!
classic Borat line, i do this one for my friends all the time, me and my buddy have our Borat impressions perfected.
Have you seen the episode where Borat goes around with a republican who is running for an office in some small town? I’m gonna try to find a clip of it on google video, Its halarious!!
yeah hes pretty funny, but i find he can only be entertaining for a little while.
there was this one really funny one where he got this wrestling team to spell out the word P A R T Y and then yell it out, he kept making them do it louder and louder until the kids were like freaking out and jumping around everywhere (the kids were complete toolboxes too) and then finally at the end he said they were on Gay Television and they were like ‘dude, what the f*ck!?!?’
Heres another Borat quote for you ladies
‘When I think of you…I think of you, very beautiful, minus clothes, waa-waa-wi-waa!’
