This brings up a good point.
One time I had a conversation with one of my friends, and he asserted that he would rather learn from someone who isn’t as smart, but is nice. I contested that I would rather the smarter thinker who isn’t bound by caring about people’s feelings.
This is a philosophy forum. Are we here to be nice to each other? Or are we here to promote thought? I’m actually asking. If you come to a forum just to fuck around and chat with people, go to the TMZ forum. If you’re content with moderators who fail as determined by a consistent section of this site just because they happen to be nice people, you are totally missing the point of actual philosophy.
I mean, in the objective, we have a bunch of adults crying about how people aren’t being nice enough to them. It’s fairly pathetic. You people need to really ask yourself what you’re here for. If it’s just to have a good time there is no harm in that. There really isn’t, but philosophy may not be the discipline for you. (That is not to say that being mean is a requirement, of course. As I know someone will try and come back with that argument. )
Anyways I’ve realized recently that most of these people are just enforcing rules. The problems with this site I think stem from the fact that the management doesn’t really care. They are never here to really look after what is going on, so of course it’s just a bunch of mods enforcing rules. I don’t know why I expected anything else. I guess because I am the type to nurture and be around my projects.
When you look at people like RU, that guy clearly just wants to be annoying. He’s set out to just be difficult from the start.
People like Siatd, CN, and I want to engage in conversation. We only get rude when, adhering to the same standard (if not higher) for logic, we’re told what we’re trying to discuss is better suited for Mundane Babble or something. It’s just an outright lack of respect, and I think that we’ve somewhat earned it over the years. We’re out there, putting in the time doing the research, and what we find is dismissed by people who admit they haven’t even looked. I don’t care if the mods here aren’t interested in the same subjects. We can’t all be the same. I care when there is obvious bias and the mods just kind of shrug and say, “Yeah fuck you.” Pav is the only one that is truly fair, but he operates like the machine so that has its downsides too.
Put in my position I think most people would be more rude than I am. At least I occasionally joke around and just let it go. But this is all important. The world isn’t getting any better. For some of us, thinking - genuinely thinking - is serious business. So yeah, we’re passionate. We’re rude. We’re unforgiving. Whatever stimulates the change that we perceive to be needed.
Maybe moderating will help fj mature his debating skills. If ilp really does only need verification of non-occult interest to become a moderator i would be disappointed. The impression i get from this forum is that they truly allow free-thinking, and the moderators do their best to achieve that ~ otherwise why do they even allow people like me to post?
Remember that it is as much the way we talk to people like fj, as the way they talk to us that is the problem.
Maybe he is young and impetuous and this will help him to develop a more mature approach to debating?
For me it is always about keeping good minds here, but if he continues as he has then that would be a shame ~ as a moderator i mean.
