I find it ironic that after millenia of trusting diviners and priests to predict the future for us with no rational basis whatsoever, we become sublimely skeptical once someone with actual predictive power like a climate-change scientist comes along.
I guess people just want to hear what they want to hear.

What is it that doesn’t make sense about scientists using hype in order to recieve funds?
The business aspect: results that do not favor big business + people in power might be rewarded with bribes and additional funding for research that DOES favor them.
The population aspect: results that concern the entire population, say, global warming, gain urgency, and therefore funding for more research.
It is not that the scientists want to get rich, it is that they want money given to them (from topics they themselves are not interested in, but the entire world is) in order to fund things that DO interest them.
A little shock and a little scare go a long way. And it is far too easy to misinterpret data, especially on purpose.
A few questions then:
Why do people outside of climatology accept these findings, when they end up leeching off of their funding (funding is very much a zero sum game. In recent years, it has only become worse).
What advantage does the Global Warming model have, from a funding/public histeria standpoint, that Global Cooling doesn’t?
If it is for funding, why not manipulate the data into something that industry would support (and therefore give money to) as well as something that the government would support (and therefore give money to).
Given that science has become an incredibly specialized field, and climatology labs that study global warming tend just to study global warming, that seems a silly way of funding pet projects.
Given that funding is contingent not upon the result of pet projects, but based on the results of the main project, why devote huge resources to something they do not endorse at the expense to things they do?

The Human Race is one of the most resilient species on the planet. If we die I doubt that there will be any life on earth besides some bacteria. Even if you take the most horrible doomsday scenario Global Warming offers I bet I could find a loop-hole were the humans live. Even if Global Nuclear war breaks out not every spot on the planet will be bombed just certain ones. whenever people talk about the end of the human race the only real threat is a threat that covers every spot on earth and is a scene that would leave no survivors. A comet hitting the earth is one example that would cover the earth in extreme heat killing all.
When the human race was in its infancy a super-volcano erupted and covered the earth in volcanic ash which blocked out the sun and lowered temperatures dramatically. About 32,000 people survived in this time with little technology. It might be a bumpy ride but will get through it.

Nuclear confrontation and Y2K were very real threats. The fact that the new millennium ticked over without a glitch is proof that when something effects the power elite, they pull out all the stops to keep the status quo. And it worked.
Re Global Warming? I have my doubts about man-induced climate change ever since I found out about global dimming – i.e. while man-made pollution blankets the earth and keeps the heat from escaping, the same pollution keeps the sun from penetrating thus almost canceling each other out. The fact that the sun radiation on earth has been dimming over the decades doesn’t seem to get a mention anywhere?
Additionally, the history of the planet’s heating and cooling – most likely caused by solar flares – makes man’s effect on the weather almost insignificant.
Having said that, I’m all for cleaning up ALL pollution simply because it can’t be good for us or the planet but to say that human activity is THE main contributor to global warming, then jump to an apocalyptic scenario, is a little too rich for me.
Let’s focus on cleaning the air without the dramatics. The last thing we need is more hot air. (hey, I like that 
)
