I know you guys can’t spend an entire lifetime just reading and criticizing arguments. So what do you do besides philosophy? I like to shoot guns at a firing range, ride motorcycles, I’ve played the guitar for a really long time, and I smoke weed alot. I’m sure there’s more, but for the most part that’s what I’m going when I’m not here, and not working.
I’m in my bedroom ALL day long, day after day. I almost never leave, save for a meal when i’m hungry. I’m starting to think incarceration would feel like this.
I used to play soccer in the warm weather, but we just had our first snowfall.
Seriously, if there were a record for such solitude, surely I would win a prize.
But I plan to put it to some good use, and perhaps write a book of fiction.
I’d say yeah its voluntary because I do like to be alone, but when I think of why I stay in one place, its because of lack of money and a car. I could always take a walk, but i’d come across too many establishments that want my business, and I cant offer them anything.
Smears, its really like I’m an astronaut in outer space. When I finally do go out, I get a little dizzy with how fast things are moving, overwhelmed by how many people there are.
I isolate so much, I would think I could do a prison stint in solitary without a complaint. Thats what it seems like to me. You can really build up a tolerance to isolation and adapt to it.
I can see what you’re saying about too much stimulation being out there. And I’ve done stints where I had no car and very little money. That just makes everything suck ass.
Your post made me think about this though. Between the ages of 15 and 20 for me, I took heavy amounts of LSD on a regular basis. Most of that time I was staying out all night, and going from place to place just getting into whatever my curiosities (sp) brought be to. Looking back at that time, I think that even amongst lots of people all the time, I had the same sense of isolation. I always feel like an observer of things more than a participant in them. I dunno if the acid had anything to do with that for sure, but I tend to think that it did. Too much introspection can make it hard to relate to others. I learned that sometimes I just had to drop the philosophical stuff and enjoy the superficial for what it is. I dunno man.
Also I’ve noticed that you’ve taken a liking to the Tao. Very good stuff. Sometimes I get burned out on the analytic nonsense that I’m taught, and I pick up the Tao to keep myself in perspective. Anywho…
What’s your book gonna be about?
I now what you mean about feeling isolated in public. I did acid at woodstock and felt that way.
Yeah, the Tao is getting me through this suck phase of my no money having life. No big deal though. I’m too wasteful to have a lot of money.
The book is part about a security guard losing his mind on the job and his venture into virtual reality of his own making. I really wish I wrote the matrix. The wachoski brothers kinda stole the wind from my sails.
I would compare my ideas on technology to those of Radiohead’s Ok Computer/Kid A albums.
i write concertos and symphonies. review these posts. script supervise, and do a few hundred other little mind blowing tasks seperate to my day job because if i stop even for a moment, i will die of depressive boredom. All of which takes place in the four walls of my bedroom, which i spend no more than half an hour away from in the course of a 24 hour day. i am a full-time hermit and sage, the yoda of this village. i tend to get depressed for a month after working any project involving a 25 hour shift. i have sacrificed all normality and any possibilities of such in the quest for understanding through extreemly hard work, and hedache inducing thought processes.
If i want to relax, a nice dvd or computer game is fun, but only for a while. I get clinically depressed if i don’t write some music every day.
It’s just a mad mad world.
Kev that sounds like an interesting theme. And I’m not familiar with radiohead’s lyrics all that much, but I did see them w/ REM when they just had that song “creep” way back when. Which woodstock did you go to?
And Mat what kind of work do you do? You sound like a madman, (and I don’t necessarily mean that in a bad way).
I went to woodstock 98 when they had the riots. It was strange because I arrived on a thursday, the day before any music was played and that’s when I did the acid. I remember once the acid took hold looking at all the people and all the fenced in areas, thinking something “bad” is gonna happen. And no doubt, the riots broke out on sunday.
The closest thing to a riot that I’ve ever been in was in amsterdam for new year’s 2000. I was nearly crushed by the crowd in the streets near dam square, (and I’m a 200lb guy). People were throwing those big magnum champagne bottles into the air and they were just crashing on people’s heads and knocking them down. There were little bastard kids shooting fireworks into the crowd at everyone from everywhere. I had this huge afro, (see pictures in “post a picture” thread), which caught on fire and I didn’t even know because I was so fucked up. These two british ladies jumped on me to put it out and I thought I was being attacked. I looked up and saw the cops standing on top of their van, and I thought to myself, “please just let them shoot some tear gas and thin this shit out!”, but they just started dancing. It was midnight, and they were playing the song “dancing queen”. I can never think of that song the same again.
wow, that sounds like one hell of a new years bash. It seems like you’ve travelled quite a bit.
what’s the wierdest thing you’ve ever thought/done while on acid?
isn’t it something like after you’ve done acid 7 times you can be considered legally insane. . . that may be a stupid rumor, but I’ve only done it like 4 times and I’m a bit batty myself. Not that I think that of you, but it must have had an effect on your overall perception, yes?
I would say that LSD has probably had a bigger effect on me than any other single thing in my life. I took it religiously, constantly for several years. When I was in high school, kids would get in trouble for cigarettes, pot or beer, but no one ever knew I was on acid. You can’t smell LSD. They just thought I was crazy and for the last 2 years of high school I just walked around the halls, never in class.
It’s hard to say what’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever done on acid is, because acid was just normal to me. I took it so much that pretty much anything that happened, happened while I was tripping. I dunno man…
I am very similar. I also get dizzy sensations when I go for walks during the day so I’ve become somewhat nocturnal only going out on the streets for walks after midnight when the they are dead.
Hunting,Fishing,Camping, target practice with a variety of weapons, making primitive weapons, throwing knives, hiking in the wilderness, keeping in physical shape, martial arts and I like studying other people’s behavior constantly by that of open public conversation.
I like going out at night to various clubs, taverns and bars.
I also love reading various forms of zoology and biology.
( Likes reading about a wide variety of animal species.)
( Women are naturally a interest of mine being a hetrosexual male.)
Joker you should look at a book called “biology as ideology” by a guy named R.C. Lewontin. If you like that one you might check out some E. O. Wilson. He wrote a thing called “sociobiology” that’s right up your alley.
