what does religion and spirituality deal with

what qualifies for a discussion in this forum…i personally think a lot should be included…take evolution…when i see what is going on in the scientific study of the origin and evolution of life i become very spiritually aroused…when religion sometimes has a problem with evolutionary theory i have a problem…i think these things need to be discussed on this forum…not in science and not in philosophy…

Why?

phyllo—
i am inspired by the details of evolution…i cant believe this ever happened…it seems very unusual especially the prebiotic
phase…i want to know more…i want to understand…i am feeling awe…

i guess this thread is a dead duck…

Ya, conversations about whether or not a conversation should happen tend to do that. Not even most philosophers can get excited about that level of abstraction.

Well, turtle, I’d say the idea would be to frame your inquiry or point-of-departure into the OP so that the conversation unfolds in the direction you’d like.

Sounds to me like you’d like to discuss evolution from a spiritual perspective, yeah? That’s perfectly appropriate for this forum.

So, like … go on. What do you want to discuss, exactly?

Do you believe the human idea of who and what God is evolves as we evolve?

A thesis about evolution as science belongs in the science forum. If someone wants to make a case that evolution has religious or spiritual implications it belongs here. A feeling of awe could be a starting point for a discussion of spirituality, but if that’s all that can be said about a connection between evolution and spirituality the discussion isn’t going to go very far.

felix----the point i was trying to make…when i look at the findings of science i become religious…just believing something in the bible doesnt do it for me…i was hoping a discussion would develop…maybe no one else feels that way…i think most atheists are too busy attacking sky-daddy…

That’s fine with me …go for it. startalkradio.net/show/cosmi … es-aliens/

i dont think you quite understand what i am saying…what are your religious and spiritual beliefs…

I think all religions worthy of the name point to the same ultimate reality that they symbolize in in different ways. Spirituality involves participating in that reality in various ways.

When I look at evolution I can’t cope with the time-scale which just bows my mind and yet, the processes described need a lot of time. This is where I start thinking about statements that for God a thousand years is like a night-watch that has just passed.

I look out at the world and realise that I’m in it, that is, I’m one of the uncountable processes going on and either I contribute to the promotion of life and intelligence, or I am part of entropy, and contribute to the decline of life on this planet. This all doesn’t, of course, depend on individuals, but is dependent upon our collective effort. And we are all interactive and interreactive even towards later generations. In fact, it seems to me that we have to ask ourselves whether we are prepared to take responsibility for our childrens childrens environment, whether in society or in nature.

i think religion and spirituality is enhanced by our understanding of nature… science helps me be more religious not less…
i see the bible and other religious writings as man-made not god-made…

OK, but science is science and religion is religion, right?

I believe that both enhance each other …

bob–why do you want them to stay apart…everything may be one…

Science is generally concerned with logical proof of experiments. Religion is concerned with experiential awareness of one’s place in the universe. Where they can come together in in the understanding that each evolves and each are necessary.

ier-----------i think it can be fused even more…francis collins, the head of nih, is an example of a religious scientist.

Religion and spirituality deal with the predictable behavior of individuals and societies, and sometimes nature.

i dont understand what you are saying james…
